POSTS STORIES REELS

I finally made it to London this weekend to see my work in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition—such an honour to be in Gallery 1, selected by Katherine Jones RA. My work is number 216, and if you turn right when you walk in, you'll see it. The room is beautiful; it focuses on gardens and allotments, something I've been coming back to again and again in my work over the past few years.

Thanks @lucy_illustrates , @francesives and @philipharrisillustration for celebrating with me 🥂 (and being my personal photographers 😂) and so lovely to catch up with you @lucia.elfina.para

Swipe to see just one wall of the exhibition, which spans over 10 rooms. The exhibition runs until the 23rd of August at @royalacademyarts by @emmacarlisle_

🌳 Publication Day! 🌳 Competition closed 🌳

It’s finally here! My book is officially out in the wild! A project that started in 2020 as I watched trees blossom and bloom on my daily walk. As I began to research trees the book became so much more. Learning that trees talk to one another, send out warnings and support family member’s at a time when I couldn’t connect to mine felt so meaningful.

To win a signed copy of my new book and a postcard set, all you have to do is -

1) Be following me - @emmacarlisle_
2) Like this post
3) Comment and tell me your favourite type of tree 🌳 and tag a friend who might like to enter!
4) For a bonus entry, please share a picture of a tree on stories and tag me! I would love to see photos of trees near you!

A winner will be chosen and announced (on this account) on Monday 27th! So get sharing!

I’m doing an Instagram take over with @bigpicturepress later today, so make sure you head over to see more behind the scenes from the book!

(Rules – not affiliated with instagram in any way, prize cannot be exchanged for any vouchers or monetary value, giveaway is open internationally 🌍, closes 9.00am Monday 27th of June, must have completed 1 - 3 on the requirements to enter.) by @emmacarlisle_

Hare sketches for screen print ideas, swipe to see print in progress.

I’ve chatted a lot on Patreon the last few months about screen printing, originally I wanted this print to take 1 week but we’re currently on week 6 and it’s not quite ready. I started with these hare sketches so I could figure out what composition, line and tone I wanted to take through into my final print, I found it really useful.

I’ve had a few messages recently where people have been interested in prints, original artwork and books, @philipharrisillustration has set me a mini challenge to get my shop back up and running by November, will it happen? Maybe! Sign up to my newsletter to be first to know 🙂 link in bio 💛 by @emmacarlisle_

VELVETEEN•RABBIT’S•LIFE•LESSONS
It was an interesting commission, to take the 1922 children’s classic The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams and explore its enduring lessons for life, relevant not only for the children for whom the story was first written, but also for those grown-up children we become.

The result is Velveteen Rabbit’s Life Lessons, the original text with an exploration of the key ideas expressed through its gentle storytelling — how we become real & move towards authenticity, the acceptance of loss, the value of resilience, the enduring power of love, the wisdom that can come with age, the joy & fun of friendship.

Williams knew about loss. Born in London in 1881, she was seven when her father suddenly died. Then, in her 40s & a mother herself, living in the US she wrote The Velveteen Rabbit. It was originally commissioned by Harper’s Bazaar in 1921, to accompany illustrations by her daughter Pamela Bianco, & billed as ‘fairy story for grown-ups’, its universal themes resonating with a generation that had lost so much from the flu epidemic & WW1.

The following year the story appeared in book form, with illustrations by the well-known British artist William Nicholson, and became an instant classic. The book has been in print in various incarnations ever since, beloved by generations & popping up in popular culture from time to time — the 1988 film Mystic Pizza, & in two episodes of Friends (Season 4, Episode 6 & Season 8, Episode 6) — it was Chandler’s favourite children’s book.

Working on this, pondering on its life lessons during a time of global geopolitical turmoil & socioeconomic stress for so many, it was curiously life-enhancing to pause & reconsider some of the universal truths about love & resilience & magic enshrined in a children’s story.
