Firstly thank you for all the love that you’ve shown for the cheese and grape display hedgehogs. Due to popular demand I will be opening my books one more time. More hedgehogs will be available for pre-order tomorrow morning at 9am (Thursday 1st October). They will be ready at the beginning of November for all your seasonal gatherings. by @emmacarlow

I’m trying out the reverse colour way of clay, traditionally used by 18th century Sussex potters for their inlaid Slipware pieces. This is a white stoneware clay, inlaid with terracotta. It’s a really fun process, scraping off the terracotta to reveal the design. It’s the closest I’ve come to an excavation experience! by @emmacarlow

Did anyone else feel a little emotional watching the program about the journey of the Bayeux tapestry from Bayeux to the British Museum last night? I felt a little tearful on many levels (British history/women’s work/oppression/embroidery/invasion/war/etc. etc.) but the relationships that were obviously forged between the French and British conservators and museum staff were lovely to behold. A beautiful illustration of humanity amidst all the rubbish going on in our country at the moment. It was touching that this magnificent yet fragile work of art could bring people together in such away.

Here at Anne of Cleves house in Lewes, where @jolambart @isobelxsmith and I have our show, we have our own tapestry, which I took a closer look at this morning. Apparently it is called a Soho tapestry because most of tapestries in the 17th/18th centuries were made in and around Soho. This one was made by John Vanderbank, reputably the greatest tapestry weaver of this time, in the style of the ‘Indian Manner’. We were told by one visitor that tapestries like this were often copies of copies of and sometimes copies of other tapestries and that every time they were copied the details changed a bit. A sort of tapestry version of Chinese whispers. I was intrigued to see all the different ways that it has been repaired over the years.

In the final picture you can see how beautifully it offsets the presents (reputably given to Anne of Cleves on the occasion of her marriage to Henry VIII) by Isobel Smith.

Our show, Snog, Marry, Avoid continues today from 10-4 and this weekend at Anne of Cleves’ house, no. 160 on the @artwavefestival trail. The house is free to visit as part of Historic Open Houses this weekend.

Thank you to all those who visited Snog, Marry, Avoid over the weekend. It was lovely to welcome familiar faces as well as three coach loads of unsuspecting history buffs!

Here is another of the table decorations that I have been commissioned to make by the Fondamento Dello Scherzo for the wedding of Heidi Scherzo next year. You may think that the cheese hedgehog is a 1970’s invention but in fact this party favourite was a popular Tudor tradition. Legend has it that a creative chef in the royal kitchen was inspired to make one, prompted by pictures of hedgehogs rolling around in vineyards, collecting grapes for their children, that she had seen in medieval bestiaries. This is a recreation of a typical Sussex cheese and grape hedgehog that I believe would have graced the tables at the wedding of Anne of Cleves and King Henry VIII.

This work will be on display at Anne of Cleves house in Lewes from 10-4 this weekend and next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, alongside that of @jolambart and @isobelxsmith in our show, Snog, Marry, Avoid. We are venue 160 on the @artwavefestival Lewes trail.

I’m waiting for this to come out of the kiln. It’s a wedding cake topper for the wedding of Heidi Scherzo, daughter of Fabrice, to Elton Tusk.

You may remember that Heidi was an intern, helping @jolambart, @isobelxsmith and me with our excavation of the lost village of Slynde. She became besotted by the pantomime horse and she asked me to depict Elton and her, atop the noble beast for her wedding cake decoration.

I have used a traditional technique, particular to Sussex, of inlaying a white pipe clay in local terracotta. It will be on display as part of our show, Snog, Marry, Avoid at Anne of Cleves house this weekend from 10-4 and the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday (11,12,13 September) from 10-4. We are part of the Artwave Festival, venue number 160

More from the Met! I saved a very useful post from @tabby.booth.artist asking for recommendations for things to do on a short visit to NYC (I’ll put in my stories). Someone recommended the MET Cloisters. It’s quite a trek to get there, but very worth it. If you’re a fan of the Cluny in Paris, you’ll love the Cloisters. The museum has been built in a Romanesque or Gothic style to house the beautiful architectural elements of the museum. Using the same ticket you can also visit the main museum, so I raced down there afterwards. I do have notes, so if you want to know anything just ask me. taken in Cloisters Museum and Gardens by @emmacarlow
