Details of incredibly beautiful bonnets, christening gowns and a shawl handed down Callum’s family to Win who is now 99. They would have been made entirely by hand - down to every lace detail and polkadot - by a family member, she thinks as far back as the 1820s.

The last couple of slides show mends on worn pieces and a scrap of fabric - stained and very ripped but still mended and kept for future use. by @emmacrbtr

The Archive in Hand is a workshop series exploring the role of textiles in recording, shaping and transmitting history. Over four sessions held at the Goldsmiths Textile Collection, we’ll be engaging with archival objects through hands-on workshops that centre material ways of knowing and learning.

Introducing The Archive in Hand, a series of collaborative summer workshops exploring the role of textiles in recording, shaping and transmitting history.

Over four sessions held at the Goldsmiths Textile Collection, we’ll be engaging with archival objects through hands-on, participatory workshops that centre material ways of knowing and learning.

The collection was founded as a teaching tool by textile artist Constance Howard. Today it holds over 4,000 objects and remains an important, publicly accessible resource.

We’re so excited to be working with four facilitators who have each responded to the archive in their own way, including creative writing sessions, zine making and stitched samplers. We’ll be announcing further details and booking over the next few weeks.
