The start of a new year seems like a good time to say ‘Hi!’ again. To anyone who is new here, my name is Emma. I’m a journalist, broadcaster and editor who likes to think, speak and write about deep things. I love an interesting conversation, and am never happier than when nattering away about the stuff that really matters. I’ve written for national newspapers and magazines. I’ve run PR for a festival, and hosted and spoken on its main stages. I am deputy editor of Premier Christianity magazine, present a podcast and chat regularly on Premier’s radio stations, covering news and current affairs mostly. I’ve loved Jesus since I was a small child, but my faith journey hasn’t always been straight forward. My family were not church goers and, when I was 12, my dad (a world powerlifting champion, don’t you know) left us for the first time. My teenage years were a mess of repeated re-abandonments, the result of an addiction to steroids and cocaine that we didn’t know he carried. An affair, debt, fighting for a living on the mean streets of East London - you name it, he did it. If you’d like to know more, my first book, All the Times You Were Not There, is out now It’s an honest exploration of growing up in the 80’s in an East End Essex family, of elite sport and drug addiction, of raves, redemption and the scars nobody sees. So this was a super fun night. For one gig only I got to be the weight lifting part of the duo and join the @tough_talk crew! And the best part? Sharing our story together with my old man @arthurwhite884 and a room full of teenagers. When I was their age, I didn’t know what to believe or whether there was any hope out there. I wasn’t sure anyone cared or how my busted up family could ever be put back together again. Then, Jesus did the impossible. 30 years later, here we all are. Oh, and yeah. But how did you forgive exactly? It’s the single most common question people have asked me since I put my life story out there into the world. “I can only say it was a miraculous, gracious gift” has been my honest, slightly bewildered answer for the best part of 30 years. It’s not untrue, but is there more I could say? Better words that would help to describe how my family and I were fully reconciled? Words that don’t diminish the pain or the harm done to us, but that offer something more to those who ask the question, often from their own places of pain. These thoughts, and many many more, whirled around my head as I rode the train to London, engrossed in a book that I hadn’t expected to move me quite so much. I stood in a garden at lunchtime, speaking with a BBC producer about sharing my story on a radio show. “We’d like to focus on the forgiveness and reconciliation angle”, she said. “Honestly, we haven’t found any other hopeful stories.” Hours later, I sat down with @amyorrewing to talk about her book. Why she decided to write it. Why it is important now, in a world that is tearing itself apart, more anxious that ever, so desperate for hope, for a better story. Forgiveness is proven to be good for your actual physical health. It doesn’t mean saying that what happened to you doesn’t matter. It does mean that, embedded in the very fabric of the Christian faith is a mechanism for dealing with hurt and pain, accepting and releasing forgiveness and living in the beautiful hope of new life. My latest London trips have been a lot - especially in the hottest few weeks I can remember in the city! Recording episodes of The Profile podcast with @amyorrewing and @christians_in_sport Staff summer gatherings, worshipping and working and watching football together Hanging out with my daughter and her friends, introducing her to the streets where I lived and stumbling across late night jazz bars Press nights in cathedrals and beautiful music and moving images that stir the soul. Books that cut deep and summer nights that remind me all is golden Thankful for all of the conversations, and all the ways they stretch me by @emmajfowle
