. . … then shingle-style was the style for you. It was, after all, “the architecture of the American summer, “ as architectural historian Vincent Scully once wrote, a style “open to the sea, the air, and the light - an architecture created entirely for recreation, escape, and the temporary release from urban pressure.”Signature practitioners like Fred L. Savage and William Ralph Emerson designed “cottages” with sometimes 25 to 35 rooms, with an eye to making the most of the landscape… … All of these demonstrate the entire team’s intentions for the family. “Although newly designed and constructed,” Fisher says “it feels as if it has always been there and will be for generations. “ 𝐌𝐇𝐃 𝑀𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐻𝑜𝑚𝑒 + 𝐷𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛， October 2026 “Hugging the Coastline” 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 Debra Spark Thank you @mainehomedesign and a very special client for this wonderful feature． 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 @peterzimmermanarchitects 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 @nateholyokebuilders 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 @weininteriors 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 @emmakellylandscape 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 @jeffrobertsimaging by @emmakellylandscape
. . In Maine, there has always been a deeply rooted relationship with shingle style architecture. Here, shaped by coastline, the site and its nuances providing the blank palette in which to begin. Excerpts from @oceanhomemag May | July 2026 edit. “At the start, firm principal Warren Fisher soaked up the region’s distinctive character, drawing inspiration from nearby architecture while registering the landscape’s rustic textures and earthy hues. In response to these inputs, he drew a well-scaled, timeless retreat with sweeping rooflines, a granite foundation, and both covered and open-air porches.” The site had its own intricacies but each held its own in the finished design. “ Pushed to one side of the property, the resulting home is angled ever so slightly, facing the rocky coastline, nestled into stands of established trees. “This stretch turns all the key living spaces into one-room-deep masses, allowing views and light to enter from multiple directions. They also jig back and forth along the horizontal spine, making the structure look like it grew over time.” More to read and see in the current issue. 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 Jennifer Sperry 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 @peterzimmermanarchitects 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 @nateholyokebuilders 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 @weininteriors 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 @emmakellylandscape 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 @jeffrobertsimaging by @emmakellylandscape

. . . The site’s natural character informed the guiding principle of this new house design. Well scaled and shingle style, it is intrinsically tied to place … not only for retreat, but a life well shared. In coastal Maine, panoramic views set an immediate tone... interiors articulate a study of transparency and light. Some places don’t announce themselves.
They reveal themselves slowly. This one sits quietly in the Maine woods — timber rising, steel holding its breath, a frame of glass reaching straight toward the trees. Right now she’s all bones and daylight. Raw lumber. Cold air moving through the frame. The kind of beautiful chaos that exists before a house becomes a home. Stand here for a moment and you can already see it:
morning light pouring through that window like it owns the place…
snow falling just beyond the glass…
boots by the door, a fire somewhere crackling below. But for now, she’s in that magical in-between.
Half blueprint. Half dream. And we’re incredibly honored to be shaping her story alongside some brilliant minds:
the thoughtful architecture of Whitten Architects @whittenarchitects
the masterful craftsmanship of Morse & Doak Builders,
and the poetic landscape vision of Emma Kelly @emmakellylandscape Maine has a quiet way of reminding you that good things take time.
We’re listening carefully. Stay tuned — this one’s going to be something special. #denieceduscheone #interiordesign #portlandmaine #newenglandhomes by @emmakellylandscape
