Final one for KEEP ✨ With the camera work, I wanted to be sensitive to both the dramatic and comedic beats of the story. As the tone shifted, the camera movement increased, mirroring the evolving relationship between the characters as it was tested. Next I’m sharing some stills from KEEP (1/3) Keep is a dramatic comedy about an ex-lighthouse keeper on the Dover coast, whose mundane existence is thrown into flux when he gets a young Afghan refugee as his apprentice. Getting to shoot inside a lighthouse was such a unique experience and came with some exciting challenges, especially when filming in and around the sea but it made the whole project even more memorable. Final post for INDEPENDENCE ✨ Inspired by Amba’s journey, finding the light in the darkness became a central theme that shaped the visual approach, reflecting her transformation throughout the film. INDEPENDENCE (2/3) Creating intimacy with Amba’s character was integral to the film. We leaned into a documentary-style approach, shooting entirely handheld and reacting instinctively to the action, allowing the audience to become immersed in Amba’s experience. @bfinetwork Amba played by @jojoiliza Writer & Director @krljackson Producer @_main.protagonist_ DOP @emmalangguth PM @producer.gabs 1st AD @keryn.mae 2nd AD @simibick 1st AC @ollie_pp 2nd AC @yared Gaffer @shaunwaldie Spark @misha_omelchuk Sound Designer @chaddesignssound Original Music @lilsimzs Costume @kashmirwickhamstylist Makeup @paigemichelmakeup @mirrordoorfilms @panavisionofficial by @emmalangguth
Over the next week, I’ll be sharing a selection of previous projects that I had the pleasure of shooting alongside some incredible creatives. First up: INDEPENDENCE (1/3) Independence follows Amba, a young woman whose time in the care system has abruptly ended. She now faces the ‘care cliff’ as she struggles to survive living independently. Hello @emmalangguth here, hosting for the week! THE SONG OF A LOST BOY The Song of a Lost Boy is a stop-frame animation that I had the privilege to shoot as part of my master’s at the @nftsfilmtv . Directed by the incredibly talented @danielquirke , the film was nominated for a BAFTA and went on to win a Royal Television Society Award. The story follows Ben, a young choir boy whose voice breaks mid-solo, leading to a crisis of faith. As he runs away from his community, we’re taken on his journey to rediscover himself and his voice. The film took around nine months to shoot, with two sets shooting simultaneously towards the end, and it was my first experience working on an animation — a huge learning curve! While the process was highly collaborative, my role as DOP was much more hands-on and independent compared to live action. With no large crew, and just me handling both camera and lighting, I had the freedom to experiment and explore different techniques. It felt like I was lighting entire worlds, rather than just individual spaces. The set builds were sensational, from caves to churches to expansive desert landscapes, and I loved the challenge of bringing each environment to life. One of the most playful and inventive lighting techniques came when we were shooting inside a cave with a pool of water. I wanted the water to have an otherworldly, almost magical quality. After experimenting with several setups, I discovered that the most effective and simple approach was an iPhone torch placed under a mirrored vase, resting on a rotating turntable. The turntable’s motion created gentle ripples that reflected onto Ben’s character, adding a dreamlike quality to the scene. There were also numerous camera movements that I hadn’t fully anticipated would be so much more intricate and time-consuming than in live action, with some shots taking weeks to complete. We incorporated tracking shots, contra-zooms, and even some slow motion! Every single movement was physically animated by @danielquirke and @rich_farris .The characters, made from wax, had their skin meticulously animated frame by frame, which gave them a uniquely tangible and organic quality. by @emmalangguth
