This summer we drove from Brighton to Riga in our campervan, taking the slow route through Denmark, Sweden, Estonia and Latvia.

Since coming home I’ve been busy weaving for the @collectiva_co Art of Rural Life exhibition for @artwavefestival so am just finally getting round to sharing some moments from our trip… by @emmapoppenborg

The Art of Rural Life…

Currently on show at Laughton Church as part of @artwavefestival

Organised by @collectiva_co the exhibition includes 14 artists and makers celebrating their connecting to the rural landscape.

I’ll be there over the week with a selection of baskets inspired by traditional British agricultural forms.

Open Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 5th - 20th September 11am - 5pm

Before I found basketmaking, I spent a few years trying different workshops and learning from different makers - here are some of the things I tried along the way.

- Spoon carving with @axeandpaddle - I loved the process of turning a branch into a spoon but found having an axe so close to my fingers pretty unnerving.

- Seaweed pressing with @molesworthandbird such a beautiful way to spend a morning and I still press seaweed at home whenever I find a particularly nice piece

- Brush making with @geoffreyfisherstudio I love my brushes so much, highly recommend his book “Catapult and Keyhooks” for some great projects

- Contemporary basketry with @harrietgoodallartist and @taketwoartcourses this is what really started it all, I was hooked and more than two years on I still refer back to the course so highly highly recommend it for anyone interested in exploring basketry techniques in a contemporary way.

- Traditional English willow basketry with @catherinebeaumont_basketmaker where I made my first willow basket and met my mentor

I now go to a workshop once a year to learn something new, related to basketmaking. Last year it was leatherworking with @wolframlohr to learn techniques to enable me to add leather handles to my baskets.

This year, I’ll be learning a neolithic weave technique in rush with @timjohnsonartist, which I’m realllllly looking forward to. by @emmapoppenborg

Tis the season 🌱💚 RECIPE below…

Wild Garlic Pesto:
- 100g Wild garlic
- 150g Cashews
- 60ml Olive oil
- 1 tbsp Natural Umber ACV
- Pinch of Salt

I don’t tend to weigh amounts so the above is very much a guesstimate. Just whizz together and adjust to suit your taste… The Natural Umber ACV is the magic ingredient in this - gives it a tang and a sweetness which is👌

Field Notes
Chúc mừng năm mới 🐴🧧✨

Thinking back to two years ago, on a trip to Vietnam where I spent the most magical morning outside Hoi An with Sáu, learning the basics of working with bamboo.

The highlight of the trip and I’m so grateful for that time.

I’m now dreaming of Vietnamese sunshine and Pho 🍜 and baskets… taken in Hội An by @emmapoppenborg
