I have finally come around to sharing my wearable art, made in my senior year of high school which just came to an end yesterday. Using recycled/up-cycled materials, I and my fellow artists were instructed to create our own wearable pieces of artwork to be displayed in several Anderson and Greenville fashion shows. As this challenge was flexible regarding what I could create, I was able to utilize materials that represented a part of who I am.

The first dress consists of:
2000 jump rings
650 business cards
60 needle boxes

The first dress (in which I simply label the “tattoo dress”) is a paper and chain mail design, made of business cards from the artists at the tattoo shop I apprentice at. I cut the cards into diamond shapes, glued them to the back of another business card, and proceeded to cut the boarder card into a larger diamond shape to form a perimeter around each card. Towards the bottom of the dress and the train, I ran out of black and white business cards so I used tattoo needle/cartridge boxes to create variety with an ombré pattern from black and white to purple. Then I used a push pin to poke a hole in each corner so I could loop my jump rings into the holes to connect each card. I used pliers to open each jump ring, and at each corner connection, there are 3-5 rings intertwined. I used layers of chain links for the straps for greater durability, as the dress began to get heavy.

The process of putting this dress on might have been my favorite part. It made me laugh every time. This required two helpers to stand on their own chair, and lift it up as I squatted down and wiggled my way up. The helpers would lower it down on me until it was resting on my shoulders. Every single dress change required many repairs, as the rings would break away from the cards CONSTANTLY.

Through every trial, error, and success, I find this one of my most challenging and incredible work of art yet. Thank you 🖤🤍.
