I'm quite proud of this poster. 😁

The photoshoot for the background image took about 6 hours, including setting everything up. Every photo I took during the shoot was long exposure in the dark, it was A LOT of trial and error. Eventually I ended up with something I liked and the promoter really liked the end result too.

I wanted the editing to be as minimal as possible. The only things I did to the image were adjusting the brightness and contrast a little bit and adding a vignette. That's all. No Ai, just a few hours of long exposure photography and a little bit of Photoshop.

When the promoter ( @savagereignpromotions ) commissioned me for this poster, I ran a few ideas by her. She liked the idea of an altar. For those of you who don't know what an altar is, it's a space dedicated to spiritual practice. They can look very different depending on what religion they're used for, but basically an altar is just a table covered in stuff.

3 WEEKS TO GO!!! A Wretched Summoning is nearly here with an incredible line up of bands: Slowrot, Omnium, The Abducted, Ecdysis, and coming all the way from Victoria is Choof as the headline act.

Also featuring pop up vendors and a DJ spinning metal bangers between bands (I wonder who that could be).

Saturday 24th October at Arthur Art Bar, 66 Currie St, Adelaide. Presale tickets $15, $20 at the door. Doors open at 6pm. 18+. Portion of proceeds go towards animal welfare.

Behind The Scenes: A Wretched Summoning poster art work.

Slide 1 is a behind the scenes photo from the photo shoot I did for the A Wretched Summoning poster. I didn't use Ai to create the image of an altar, just a bunch of stuff I already had in my home plus a few cards from a Tarot deck I bought specifically for this photo shoot. 6 hours of trial and error doing long exposure photography in the dark. Real candle light, a UV lamp, a red light bulb, and at one point I used my phone to "paint" the scene with ambient light.

Slide 2 is the cards I used, plus the box. All the other decks I had at the time I felt were too "cute", I needed something dark and gritty to suit the aesthetic of the poster. I felt that The Gothic Tarot by Joseph Vargo was perfect for the look I was trying to achieve.

Slide 3 is the silver sheen obsidian orb. Yes, it does look that trippy in real life, I didn't edit it to look that way.

Slide 4 should answer a commonly asked question: "is that a dove?" No, they are 2 galah wings. You can't tell by looking at the poster, but there are pink feathers on the under side of the wings. by @emmerson754

"You draw a lot of black and white pictures, do you not like working with colour?"

Not at all, I love colour! 💜

"Your work is very dark! It's so negative and depressing. Why don't you draw something more cheerful like flowers or something?"

I love drawing flowers! Especially the poisonous ones. 😁

Here's a progress shot of a study of a monkshood plant, drawn with pencils and felt tip pens. Also known as blue rocket, devil's helmet, The Queen of Poisons, or by its scientific name Aconitum Napellas, monkshood is one of the most toxic substances on the planet.

All species of aconite produce one of the most uniquely shaped flowers I've ever seen with a hood-shaped petal on top of the flower. Sometimes, the tip of the "hood" produces a curved point that reminds me of the sting on a scorpion's tail.

Day 30: Spirit of Suicide

Please don't worry about me, I'm ok.

When I had the dream that inspired this piece, I was in a very dark place. In the lead up to 2022, I was treated horribly by former co-workers in a previous job, by a former friend who I eventually reported to the police, and by a family member. I went on antidepressants; they didn't work, they increased my desire to end my life instead of subduing it. I stopped taking the medication after I took a blade to my wrist.

A month later, I dreamed that I was surrounded by a consuming darkness. An evil spirit laughed at me through the murky abyss with obsidian black eyes and a sadistic grin that was wet with black venom. A noise pierced my ears like a screeching violin or nails on a chalk board. As this spirit showed me someone using a blade on themself, I was gripped by horror and dread as I realised that this noise is the sound heard on the astral plane when someone uses a blade with the intention of ending their own life.

I begged them to stop hurting themself, but they couldn't hear me. The more I screamed, the more this malevolent apparition cackled at my helpless urge to save this poor person. Evil spirits delight in suffering and despair. They don't just feed on negative emotions, they feed energy into the negativity they create. When someone ends their life, it creates a tremendous discharge of negative energy that they can feed from. Misery is a delicacy for them.

If you work with gods, usually you need to give substantial offerings and put in effort to get their attention. With these lowly beings, all it takes is a negative emotion and they come to you straight away.

Day 28: Egregore

One night, with my dreaming eye, I saw a number of traumatizing scenes. Every dream sequence happened in what looked like the same familiar town. I saw a bar fight where a working class man wielded a used syringe as a weapon. I saw a gaunt youth, barely in his twenties, shoplifting clothes from a second hand store. He bowed to peer pressure and lost almost everything to his addiction, he needed new clothes but had no money, he knew charity shops can't afford security guards. I ran through moonlit streets and stopped by a glittering pile on the ground. I stooped down to see a mess of broken glass and blood, sparkling from the light of the moon and a nearby street light. A dream within a dream showed me a desperate addict with shaking hands trying to get her fix, but her glass pipe and lighter slipped between her trembling fingers. She tried to salvage her score spilled onto the ground, but her uncontrollable shakes caused her to cut her fingers on the broken glass.

As soon as I woke up, I knew that the scenes of this terrible dream were caused by the egregore of Adelaide's meth epidemic. In the most simplistic terms, an egregore is collective energy. If enough people share the same ideas, the same behaviours, the same emotions, it can result in an entity called an egregore. The egregore of Adelaide's meth epidemic not only feeds on the addicts, it also feeds on the friends, family, and strangers who are traumatized by the effects of the addiction. The egregore not only feeds from, it also feeds the addicts who will continue to give the egregore more energy.

The sketch depicts the Adelaide CBD at night time facing South East. The night sky shows the exact time I decided to end a relationship with a friend over his destructive addiction to meth. While that was years before I had this dream, I thought the night sky was appropriate for this piece. Saturn, the planet associated with endings and karma, ascends in the East, an omen heralding the death of a friendship, echoing the death of hundreds if not thousands of relationships due to meth addiction.

Day 25: The Curse of Cain

I'm not going to go into too much detail about the meaning behind this drawing, however there is a clue in the title. The innocent I'm holding and protecting is myself as a child. The child version of me has a swollen black eye and fresh stitches just below the right eyebrow, the adult version of me still has the scar many years later. The Hebrew words on my chest translate to "The Curse of Cain".
