Octo’s ears are on a swivel as we head to the first jump. He’s always been a bit of an anxious guy, but he’ll focus up after we get to jumping. Thankfully despite his nerves he’s still very honest, and a bit of extra leg is all you need to get to the other side of the fence.

He leaves room to spare as he leaps over the first jump, elegantly I might add. I smile and note that his ears are now dutifully pricked forward, hunting for the next fence. He continues the course as he started, leaving plenty of space between his hooves and the poles. The tension continues to leave his body as he jumps around too, settling right into his work.

I slow him to the trot for our courtesy circle, and Octo flicks his toes all the way around. I pat him as we exit and meet Addi and Hope outside the ring, where Addi slips him a treat. She also scratches his face like he deserves, “Did he feel good? He looks good.”

“Yes, I missed this horse.” I sigh and continue to scratch his neck, “Are you sure we can’t keep him?”

Addi laughs and shakes her head, “We’d be very, very bankrupt if we kept every horse that you ask that about.”

I share a look with Hope and I know she knows what I’m about to suggest, “I don’t have the time or the money for another horse.” She stifles a laugh.

I groan as I turn back towards the ring to look at my next course, “You guys hate me.” I whine, which earns a proper laugh from both of them.

“Are you sure you should be riding today?” Addi questions as she hands me Mannys reins, her tone laced with concern.

I’ll admit, I look a tad ridiculous in my jacket, being that it’s a summer morning in August. In my defense, it is cold this morning, but I also have a fever. I should probably be in bed but, “Yes. It’s just Manny and Kat, I sorted everyone else out already.” I reply.

Addi follows as I head out to the mounting block, she’d been insistent on helping me if I was going to ride. She holds Manny for me as I climb on, “I could’ve ridden them for you.” She reminds me. All I have the energy for is a shrug, and I nudge Manny into a walk.

Our training session goes well, and I’ve finally been making it around sizable courses on the gelding. I couldn’t afford to miss a day of riding him, not with my track record of continuously falling off. I didn’t want to lose progress just because I wasn’t feeling well. No matter how exhausted I felt as I walked up to the barn.

Hadley and Ariella are in the barn getting their horses ready when I hand off Manny to Addi. I quickly take a seat on one of the tack trunks in the aisle.

“Whats with the jacket?” Hadley asks, and I can tell her gaze is now surveying me.

When I look up Ariella is also observing me, “You look like shit.” She remarks and I scoff.

I tug my jacket up over part of my face, “Feel like it too.” I murmur and watch Addi put Manny away.

“I told her not to ride!” She calls over her shoulder, and I roll my eyes. Once she’s out of earshot I mimic her, which earns a laugh from both Hadley and Ariella. It makes me feel slightly better, and I allow myself a small smile.

Vi’s tail swishes as I ask her for a bit more engagement from her hind end, but she complies and steps through in her trot. We’d come quite some way since the winter. A few months ago I could hardly walk the mare without her trying to deck me. Too much time off resulted in her training taking several steps back, and once the weather warmed up I realized I needed to get it together and set up a schedule for her.

I let out a breath and coax her down into the walk. She takes a moment to be persuaded, obviously enjoying her trot around, but does as I ask. I loosen my reins and pat her neck, now content to cool out before I have to hop on my next horse of the day.

Vi had recently started over fences, and seems to really enjoy it! I have plans to show her sometime soon. Dabbling in both the hunters and the jumpers to see if she has a preference. I’m already almost sure she’s inclined towards the jumpers, but I’m still holding out hope for some semblance of a 3 ring horse. by @emmi_eventing

miss bishop is growing up! now that i have time to spare for my two babies we’ve been really making some progress. bishop has started over fences, and has a very cute jump if you couldn’t tell. thankfully, she’s enjoying the slow hunter life and is quite lazy. nothing under the jumps phase her either, and she’s pretty much unimpressed by anything we do.

today we popped over her first bigger course, though we won’t be hitting up the 3ft greens anytime soon, it was nice to see how she was over something with some size to it. i’m hoping to take her in the baby greens sometime soon, but my show schedules pretty packed the next few weeks. not that bishop really seems to mind.

It’s been a busy few weeks but things are finally settling down. As much as they can I guess. With mom out of commission I’ve been handling scheduling, training rides, and with the three boys up for sale, people coming to try them. Anything and everything that comes with managing the riding, showing, and sales portion of the business. Thankfully, a few friends have recently joined me as trainers at Royal Blue, and I’m extremely grateful for the help.

Hope recently began training with us and brought all of her horses over with her, which means Chappell returned to Royal Blue! Since her sale about a year ago Hope and I have grown to be best friends, and I’ve adored the duo since Hope sat on her for her catch ride. I can’t imagine a better rider for the red mare, and she coincidentally led me to one of my favorite people 😉 Regardless of how difficult and busy things get around the barn I know I’ll have plenty of help. I can’t wait to see where we go from here!

But back to the real star of the show, Chappell. She’s been jumping the big jumps, and Hope asked for a bit of help because little Chap is quite… enthusiastic about the added height. So I of course took the opportunity to hop on her and do a training ride! We finished with a course of some 3’9 fences, minimal enthusiasm included.

Next on my list is getting Hope on Mister while I ride Chap 😁😁😁

this cutie pie is out and about for his first show! cupid is dino’s half brother, and is a very flashy boy. dino sold a little while back so cupid had to step up and fill her spot in the baby greens. i must say, he’s doing a mighty fine job.

unfortunately, i can’t keep every chromey chestnut we have 😞 so he will be up for sale shortly. i see him having a good time in all three rings, but for now he’s hanging out in the hunters! by @emmi_eventing

Avery and I happened to be together in the order of go, so we headed down to the schooling ring together for our warm up.

“I seriously don’t understand how you manage to teach, train, show and keep up with your personal life.” I sigh and shake my head, “I can barely handle two of those.”

Avery chuckles, “It’s difficult, but you’ll find a schedule.” She reassures me. I’d filled her in on everything going on at Royal Blue already, and how my workload has at least doubled now. It looks like it’s only increasing too.

I close my leg to remind Kai we have somewhere to be, and he gives me a slightly more urgent walk. I pivot the conversation for a moment, “Have you looked at the courses yet?”

“Mhm.” Avery hums, “I’ll go ahead of you.” She says before I can ask.

“Thanks,” I smile, “I need to come over to SEC and shadow you for a day. I’ll bring Manny, take a lesson too.” I start to gather up my reins as we approach the warm up arena.

Avery does the same as she speaks, “Stay for a bit when you drop Glenn and August off.”

“Might have to take you up on that!” I tell her over my shoulder as I turn away, prompting Kai into a trot. by @emmi_eventing

I sigh, watching the cremello stallion observe his surroundings. After scanning the area, he puts his head down to graze. This earns another groan from me, “I was really hoping he’d run around at least a little bit today.” I duck my head and rest it against the fence.

“You could lunge him.” Ana comments, and I can hear the smirk in her voice.

“You could lunge him.” I mimic, childish, I’ll admit, but this horse would probably fly away on the lunge line. I turn my head to the side to look at the redhead, “And what if he gets loose after he turns into a kite?” I huff.

She’s laughing when she speaks next, “I think he’d just stop and look at you like he is now.” She gestures to the stallion.

Kat observes us from the center of his pasture. I think he’s annoyed at how loud we’re being, but honestly I think just about everything bothers this horse. He really enjoys his own personal space, and while he’s not dangerous by any means, he just doesn’t have any interest in people or other horses.

He’s another jumper that was being trained by my mom pre-injury. On the ground he’s distant. He couldn’t care less about his handlers, never spooks, walks calmly around the grounds. Undersaddle is an entirely different story. He wants everything to be done his way, and if you step out of line he’ll let you know.

I’ve had an easier time with him than Manny. I’ve already seen improvement with flat work, he’s just learning how to work with his rider as a team. Regardless, he’s still strong and hot when I jump him, so I was hoping to get some of his energy out before I rode him. Silly me, because I don’t think I’ve seen him run in his pasture since he was a colt.

Kat was bred here and started within the last few years. His show name is RB Dynamight, and he’s a 6 year old dutch warmblood. He’s pretty and he knows it, and he also knows how talented he is. His jump is explosive. If he has a rail, it’s 100% rider error, and he’s going to tell you.

“SIT UP!” Mom shouts just a little too late, though I don’t know that this ride was ever salvageable.

I land on Mannys neck as his front hooves hit the ground, and he pops up to stabilize himself. I tumble over his shoulder and he goes for a lap around the arena. At this point it’s so routine that mom doesn’t come to check on me, and simply goes to catch the gelding.

I groan and get up, dusting myself off and making sure all that I’ll have tomorrow deal with tomorrow is a bit of bruising. I’d been paired up with Manny for a few weeks now and we really weren’t getting along.

He’s by Mister but was bred elsewhere, and upon starting him his breeders realized he was more than they could handle. They sold him back to us and my mom had been working with him until recently. She got injured helping break in a young horse, and so Addi and I have had to pick up the slack.

Which means I’ve taken over Mannys training along with a few others. Currently, he’s ready for the grand prixs, and that’s what Im meant to be prepping to do. The issue is that I can’t seem to stay on this horse or make it around a course without my life flashing before my eyes. I haven’t ridden a jumper that’s this eager since I was a teenager, and I’ve pretty much all but quit the jumpers since then.

Manny suits his showname, which is RB Starman, because I sincerely think he’s trying to jump the moon. He really means well but I’ve been fighting him up to almost every jump. When we have a nice jump, it’s great, but when we don’t I can barely stay on. We just can’t seem to see eye to eye and I don’t think we click.

Despite all of this, mom says I need to figure it out, and if I want to be a proper professional I need to be capable of riding any horse. So I guess I’ll be figuring it out, and hopefully I’ll learn something by the end of this. by @emmi_eventing
