May onwards.

This summer stretched out. It cast a wide net. I think that maybe there were actually two summers, one called Bindweed Summer and the other, Summer of my Beloveds. Neither was made of anything other than all the usual human experiences. One was hard and one was soft. Did you know my family came to visit? We had never been together on the coast before. My parents met the ocean at one of my favorite spots. We went to the fair and my dad loved the dahlias. Jake and Haya and me and Soren made our second annual canoe trip. It was short and good :). I started back up at Stage and patchworked in two farm jobs and a few hours at the community center, too. I'm ready to work just one job again soon. I'm ready to resume lifting weights. I'm ready to start writing ... something! Soren and I keep learning each other and I am so moved by this experience. It has pushed and pulled me in all kinds of unexpected ways. He is beside me now :). I am so happy to have cooked dinner with Evan and Claudio and Shelby. Planning a menu must be one of life's greatest joys. I did it just tonight. Something akin to Thai red curry and coconut rice! And! Don't forget the bush tit nest, the coopers Hawks, or the apple trees. All stunning companions across the many months of two important summers. by @emmielieu

Hello everybody, I'm doing my first ever popup with my wonderful friend Emily on August 23rd! We'll be cooking at Bistrot L'Stage from 4-10pm (or whenever we get sleepy) and it will be so much fun! @elkebaysorensen is curating the music, and I'll be on the pass. Please make a reservation if you want to ensure you get a table, and come say hi!

A little ode to my time @stage.fernwood. I might be looking back at working there with rose colored glasses but I can't help it! Leafing through my old photos and remembering the day to day with @matjhw and co. conjures up so many good feelings. We weren't perfect by any means. Actually, things seemed to go wrong basically all the time. But we were a scrappy and hard working little team and there was no shortage of life happening amongst us. So much tasting, fixing, fermenting, trying, growing, organizing, lamenting, salvaging, receiving, giggling. We tried not to touch the food too much. We tried for elegance and big flavor. We tried for a little Chinese. We/I never really achieved a perfect flow or consistent speed or organization. We had plenty of conflict, talking our brains out in the alley, in the corner, in the basement. We cleaned a lot of gross messes, and! We made some stunning food. I picked a lot of flowers and robot couped a boat load of mayonnaise. We managed many whole animals, whole fish, perfect vegetables, a lot of staff rice. And we accomplished a lot! Countless popups, events, dinner services, menu changes, and staff rotations, some of them better than others. All told, I'm proud of what we did and how we did it. I miss it and I'm thankful for it and I hope to do something like it again. by @emmielieu

In mid June, I left my job at Stage. Jaxy got so sick and Soren, Dan, Jake, Elle, Kaleb, and Andi all helped nurse him back to health. Soren was house sitting at that time, and we had so many back yard hangs with the cats and pup there. I started foraging for Dinner at Swan Lake on our walks. When Jax was feeling better, I made my way to Alberta to see my family. We camped and snacked and swam. Soren joined me part way through, and we visited the Zoo and the Badlands and the Gopher Museum. Naomi, Jordan and Rosie were our sweet and lovely hosts. Little adventures just kept rolling once we arrived back home. Lizard Lake, Richmond for the day, BBQs with the roomies, lunch at Little Yunnan, a paddle at Thetis. I volunteered at Teto with Nao, harvesting up a storm, and I started weight training with Airial. My quads are getting bigger for sure. Jake says I've always looked strong. He helped me and Ollie host the most magical dinner on the lake. Baby's first popup! Thank you :). Then! Canoe! Jake, Haya, Soren and I paddled the Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit and had such a good time it was hard to come home. It wasn't long, though, before I was off to Montreal to see Matthew and Vellar. We walked our toes off and talked and talked and talked, which is no surprise if you know Matthew Finn. Back at the house, Anne graced us with her presence and Soren's sister came to see the Island, too. Tourist, Botany Bay, a clothing swap, and even a new kitty. Welcome, Kotsky, you are so very cute! It has been a summer of many stuff and my goodness did I leave a lot out. Important things like baby showers and Llew walks, garden weeding and Soba dates, a circus performance, and Panama Flats. I'm so, so grateful for it all. by @emmielieu

Bowron Lakes 🛶
116 km
August 26-September 2
Soren, Jake, Haya, and Me

Millions of swimming, bad jokes, wild berries (3 kinds of blueberries! 3!!!!), paddle strokes, sun, and giggling.

Soren caught his first fish and kept us all in good spirits! I learned how to steer and made some knockout blueberry pancakes! Haya crushed her first backcountry experience and organized our most delicious meal of peanut stew. Jake was our fearless leader, took a proper mud bath, and foraged countless wild foods! A true team effort and a Very. Good. Time. by @emmielieu

:) Stage's current and ex sous chefs are coming together to do something cute and we want you to come!

Ollie and I are making a nice Sunday dinner at Jake's house on Swan Lake. We'll set up some tables outside, pick a few flowers, and put up nice food for you to eat. You bring whatever you'd like to drink. We'll supply the glassware.

We're serving rly good veggies from 1 or 3 small island farms, unusual and local cuts of meat, and some foraged and biodynamically cultivated foods! Lots of tea and flower flavors throughout! So sorry, no mods! Send me a message to ask about allergens!

There's only space for 20 people so please DM to snag the address and reserve a spot via e-transfer!

Note this is an outdoor event w bugs, bright sun, and uneven ground.

Been thinking about ...
Non-belonging and feeling alien. The difficulty of doing something different.
Love and what its consequences are and how it moves so strangely like water and in circles.
The 7 years I have spent at home with Dan and Elle, my anchors.
What to do.
Getting older and that tiny window of feeling kinda hot between 25 and 29. The way I hate taking selfies. The way I catch myself looking so tired.
Work, eternally, or at least for the last one and a half years.
The dreams I have about the ocean and the dreams I have where I am unprepared to go on a trip with you.
How far the distance is between us, the ways I craft, need, and mourn it. by @emmielieu

Elle Belle arrives home, there's spring's first wee hike, my skin freaks out and Bec and I travel to love/interview Jess and her puppets, work is washing dishes, Mama Yang and Dan are firmly in their stunning mid thirties and Rosie Roo turns two, there are eternally cats in bed and a woodpecker who put on a close up show, diner food remains superior, and sun and snow keep us on our toes. We're alive, that's for sure. by @emmielieu

Some cutie pie stuff from lately. A good beach and two covid babies in bed, a haircut from Donovan, some games and sleepy fog, restaurant chaos/restaurant tulips, Llew Bear babysat, and my soft companion in my lap and in my planter. Happy Valentines to all of the loves of my life. I am so grateful for you. by @emmielieu
