Word history:

HNIC PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
*Lethal* comes from Latin *letum* = death, and *letalis* = "of death, deadly."

- It came into English in the 1600s from Latin _letalis_ via old French. First used in medical / formal writing to mean "causing death."

- It shares root with *Lethe* — in Greek mythology, the river of forgetfulness in the underworld. Souls drank from Lethe to forget their past lives before being reborn. So _leth-_ in Greek = forgetfulness, oblivion, which the Romans linked to death.

So original sense: "pertaining to death, bringing forgetfulness/oblivion."

Over time it just became the everyday word for "fatal / deadly," and now slang for "dangerously good." by @emmortalbeats
