Do you have to respect everything about a person to appreciate what she or he has made?

A new song and some caffeine compelled me to jot some thoughts. (Blog on website) by @emmteeday

Gonna do my darndest this week to toss up some graciously snapped pics from this summer’s gigs. @tiffanyfellenz, thanks for being so quick with your camera at all these @countryholla gigs!

The Holla’s now on ice til October. Meanwhile I’ve got a Rodeo Borealis run coming up, as well as solo shows, starting this Saturday in Sturgeon Bay when I’ll be doing one of each, back to back, raising rubles for @thecanaryfund.

Mile of Music was too good. Always makes for such a shitty comedown going back to work, no matter where I’ve worked this past ~decade. Forgive my dearth of time/heart for sharing rad photos/videos people so graciously got; some really excellent recorded moments! Man, this summer’s had some real highs, with more sure to happen this weekend: 3 gigs with Tracy Bonham, with a set spinning records at the Symco Weekender sandwiched in there.

Sets up for quite the *figurative* rock’n’roll hangover next week. ‘Til then, savor the ups, ah?

Thurs 8/6: @tracybonham, Kiki’s House of Righteous Music, Madison WI
Fri 8/7: Tracy Bonham, @anodynecoffee, Milwaukee WI
Sat 8/8: DJ Matty Day x Jackie O, @symcoweekender, Symco WI
Sun 8/9: Tracy Bonham, @theparkwaympls, Minneapolis MN by @emmteeday

Backing Cory Chisel at the Mile. by @emmteeday

A Sunday 10 years ago on College Ave. in Appleton, I had finished playing @the_priggs' last @mileofmusicfest set for that year, after being up all at @samueljamesfarrell's place the night before; we had, for some poorly considered reason, decided I should bring my dog to stay at his house with me, so our dogs could keep each other company. (They proceeded to absolute *trash* the place, then escaped at 3am, then proceeded to play-brawl the entire night.) Our set was unexpectedly one of our best!

Then we got asked to play a song at Lawrence Chapel for the festival finale. I was on my own; as I was wont to do in those days, I stopped into Top Spins record store to enjoy a bit of sanctuary with the great Mark Joanis. Walking down College to the chapel, someone called out for me—I wheel around and it's my pal @grahamimages Washatka, camera in hand. He tells me to strike a pose, I oblige, *click*, "later!" Yeah, that was a great day.

Been many more such good times since; other than 2020, I've gotten to play at Mile every year since 2015.

Here's where I'll be/who I'll be with this weekend:

Fri 7/31: @corychisel (whose new single is out today), Jones Park Main Stage - 6:50pm

Sat 8/1: @hangtenband, Fox River house - 8:50pm

Sun 8/2: Hang Ten, Hilton Paper Valley Courtyard - 3:40pm

Check out a set! Hope to see you. Happy Mileage. by @emmteeday

This week’s wars: preserving Wisconsin’s music and monarch butterflies; defeating dastardly pins; eradicating boredom with fine fine music by @emmteeday

Pt. 3: Thrilling conclusion! (See 2 previous posts for full story)

NYE with @FountainsofWayneofficial was maybe the most fun gig I’ve ever gotten to be part of—just unreal! We got to do a 2nd vocal rehearsal with Chris and Gina beforehand. I got to meet @maxcollinsmusic from @Eve6, who plays bass for FoW since Adam Schlesinger tragically passed. Talk about big shoes to fill. Backstage after the show, I absurdly had the chance to literally fill Max’s shoes, as he had me try them on to show me how comfortable they were, ha!

It was nuts. A big group with everyone tried to go to another bar by the hotel afterward, but everywhere was jam-packed being NYE.

I did get to see Chris and Max the following weekend at @JoeysSong, but I’ll save that for another ridiculously delayed post.

I managed to hang with @Ian_Olvera in Milwaukee on my way back home to GB—turns out he was the lynchpin for how @Corychisel got in touch with @itsJohnperrin. For how wrong it felt when my son missed that @jdMcPhersonpix show, the universe suddenly felt wonderful. I was maximally excited for my son. My wife and I somehow managed to keep it secret.

At most I thought maybe John would write a letter to my boy, who’s been taking drum lessons for almost 3 years; John said when he was younger, other drummers were cool to him and wrote him letters.

But John did way, Way more. He also sent a handful of classic 45s: Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Clarence Henry and the like.

He also included one of his signature drumsticks that he’d used on the “Socks” tour.

The crazy centerpiece, though, was the bass drum head from his tour for JD’s “Nite Owls” record—are you kidding me?? John signed it, and even had his musical compatriot, the insanely talented Alex Hall, sign it, too.

Madness! Utter madness, this whole chain. Damn near life-affirming. John Perrin, you are an absolute LEGEND. My son sent his thank-you card not long after, but this gratitude’s eternal.

Cheers to John and to @Daniidriver—so glad to have met you both, that you’ve got each other and you’re making it matrimonial real soon!

Thanks for reading, gang; hope it brightened your day. by @emmteeday
