Honeymoon pt.3

From the beach and onto the highlands.

We flew to Cusco and were driven to Ollantaytambo, a town in Peru’s Sacred Valley that is situatated between two Incan Ruins. It was the Incan capital after Cusco was taken by the Conquistadors.

After walking through the old graneries perched on the steep mountainside we wandered upon Museo de Cuye (the guinea pig museum) basically the cutest tourist trap I’ve ever been to plus the only largely edible one.

From there we climbed, with at least 500 of our closest friends, to the other bigger Incan ruin, El Templo del Sol. This is what I needed to see before leaving Peru. These large intricately carved stones that fit together like a jigsaw no mortar required. How did they do it? The History Chanel says aliens. I kinda doubt that though cause if you’ve mastered interstellar space travel what you tryna do with rocks?

Towards the top we had a good view from where we were earlier that day.

Olluntay had a bunch of nice restaurants and bars to try and we went here. This place had a great view and I’m pretty sure if I asked for a glass of ahuayasuca I would have gotten one. But I chickened out at the last minute.

The next day the administrator of our hotel lead us on a tour of the Sacred Valley. He took us to Chincero a town famous for its Alpaca wool. We got meet Warmi’s who make goods from the Alpaca wool and see their process. Emma and I actually got to see this process three separate times so we are pretty much masters now. This photo is with a Llama not an Alpaca but he was pretty handsome and had a good personality.

Also on the tour was Mara’s a salt water spring the people have turned in a centuries old salt mine. Renae, our guide slash hotel administrator, told us the Incans do things for two reasons. For the people and for god. Once the Spanish came they started selling the salt for money but during the pre-colonial era people worked their of the benefit of the people.

We made it back to Ollantay just in time for a beautiful sunset.

The next day was the major splurge of the trip. We went to MIL, a restaurant next to a very important cultural site of Moray. MIL is owned by one of the best chefs in th by @emmunger

Honeymoon Pt. 2

After a few days of hiking in the Cordilla Blanca we were excited to relax at Peru’s northern beach town, Mancora.

We did our best to relax despite the incessant blaring music at our hotel. The hotel seemed to be the in destination for Lima’s instagram influencers. They were literally constantly live streaming and taking selfies at the pool. I asked Emma to give her best influencer pose because when in Rome.

The beach was great, the water was warm, and the sea was full of life.

The local break was perfect for my skill ability.

Emma clipped me up on the last wave of the trip. I saw the biggest sea turtles of my life. One surfaced right next to me and I could hear it breathe.

The surf shop I rented from said the rental comes with a shower. This is what they meant.

More instragram influencing for our last night because our fellow hotel guests were really starting to rub off on us.

It was a beautiful place.

Our hotel beautiful but I wouldn’t wish my worst enemy a night here… okay maybe I would. The music until 3 am really cut into my surf time.

The food was great everywhere we went. The area is known for its potatoes of Causa. People in this region also call their homies Causa.

Honeymoon Pt.1

We landed in Huaraz, Peru after 24 hours of traveling. A mountain town nestled outside the Cordilla Blanca, the worlds tallest tropical mountain range.

Our first day was spent acclimatizing to the extreme altitude. We took the bus to a trailhead, hiked a steep trail through a village, and took in views of the Cordilla Blanca.

The next day were driven into the Hurascan National Park and hiked to a beautiful Glacial Lake reaching 14,500 ft. And still well below the tree line 😆

On our final full day we went on a journey of epic proportions.

We hiked from 11,000 ft to 16,000 ft in the shadow of Nevado Hualcan.

Along the way we saw a cerac fall, 6 glacial lakes, and too many waterfalls to count.

The landscape is like nothing I have ever seen but the lupines reminded us of home.

I didn’t intend to match the alpine lakes, it happened on accident.

As we approached the high point the clouds moved and showed Nevado Hulcan in all its glory.

As we approached the top I got a headache. I stuffed a few coca leaves in my mouth and it went away. Maybe I put too many in because I started to feel like Superman.

Emma said it was the hardest, longest, highest, and most beautiful hike she had ever been on.

On the way out I was super tied but still managed to document some of additional water falls.

On the flight out, Hurascan showed itself, the Cordilla Blanca’s highest peak. Inspired me to come back with a couple of ice screws, an ice axe, any maybe even my skis. Now we go to the beach! by @emmunger
