Always Be Birding Baby
Come for the kestrels, stay for the vibes
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
New podcast episode!

Many birders across the continent have been aware of, and concerned by, the state of American Kestrels and their steady decline from places where they had once been common. Thankfully, the species is the focus of a lot of conservation attention too, namely the construction and monitoring of nest boxes across the US and Canada. Emmy Broeg is one of those kestrel advocates in her role at New Jersey’s Wild Bird Research Group. You might also know her as @emmybebirdin on Instagram and TikTok, where she shares that work with a wider community that is getting excited about birding.

S2, Ep 4: Connections
How exciting to find a recapture in a nest box! In 2023 this female kestrel was banded as an adult in St. Michaels Preserve by New Jersey Fish and Wildlife. At the time, she had laid five eggs in a box.

Through American Kestrel repopulation efforts across New Jersey we’ve been installing more next boxes on suitable land thus creating a network of desirable locations for kestrels to nest in.

Finding this very healthy kestrel, with a full crop, in a new box with another clutch of five eggs is a great indicator that we’re building connections in the region to boost the chances of population growth.

We’re getting SO close to year two of Wings Over Mercer!

On October 3rd, we’re spreading our wings across Mercer County for a full day celebrating birds, birding, research, community, and a little friendly competition… and there are SO many ways to be part of it!

Take on one of our five competition categories:

• Next Generation Team — Middle & High School
• College Team
• Company/Organization Team
• New to Birding Team
• Competitive Team — Overall Winner

And if you’re thinking, “This sounds fun, but I don’t even own binoculars…” we’ve got you covered.

Thanks to our friends at @n_o_c_s binoculars will be available for beginning birders throughout the day. Participating in the Birdathon? You can borrow a pair and take them out with your team. Joining us at the Big Sit? We’ll have binoculars there. Coming along on one of our bird walks? We’ll have you covered there, too.

The whole point is to get more people outside, looking up, and experiencing what birding in Mercer County is all about. You don’t need years of experience, or even your own gear, to join us.

Not looking to compete? Stop by the Big Sit, join a guided bird walk, meet the Wild Bird Research Group team, and learn more about the research happening right here in our region.

And JUST ADDED: Bird Trivia! Come test your bird knowledge before we wrap up the day and hand out prizes at 6 PM.

Whether you’re racing across Mercer County building a species list, picking up binoculars for the very first time, or simply coming to spend part of the day with other people who love birds, there’s a place for you at Wings Over Mercer.

Is it just me, or did fall arrive all at once?

There is A LOT happening at @wildbirdresearch right now.

Owl season is right around the corner, which means our fall migration research is about to get underway.

Wings Over Mercer is just over TWO WEEKS AWAY! If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s our all-day birding event on October 3rd—bringing together birders, researchers, students, families, and the bird-curious for a full day celebrating birds and conservation.

We just dropped new Wings Over Mercer merch designed by @vincentrose_art

We have opportunities to join our team as an Owl Research Technician or get involved as a volunteer this owl season.

And we’re looking for a Development & Membership Coordinator to help WBRG continue growing our research and conservation work.

Whew. That’s a lot.

Luckily, there’s an easy way to keep up with all of it.

Head to our website to learn about Wings Over Mercer, shop the new merch, find opportunities to get involved, and see what we’re working on this fall. by @emmybebirdin

S2, E3: Data! Measuring structural features such as tarsus length, hallux (hind toe) length, and bill length provides valuable long-term data on the condition and health of American Kestrel populations. Because these measurements reflect an individual’s physical development, changes in average body size or proportions over time can signal shifts in environmental conditions, prey availability, habitat quality, or other ecological pressures affecting the population.

When collected consistently across years and regions, these data allow researchers to monitor population trends, detect subtle changes that may not be apparent from nest success or abundance alone, and better understand how kestrels are responding to changing landscapes and environmental conditions. Together, these measurements contribute to a more complete picture of population health and help inform conservation and management efforts.
