Updated & Corrected About Me ... Nice to meet you, bookstagram. Yes, yes I did have a guy dropped on my face at a Pearl Jam concert in 1996. had to make sure you were paying attention. 😉I had a nice knot on my brow bone for weeks afterwards. One moment I was locking eyes with Eddie Vedder and the next I had a face full of butt. I still think it's hilarious and if you do too, you might enjoy the humor in my novels. Friends, I was gearing up for a social media sprint toward my January release, when my book was moved to a March release. I was having fun wearing my wax lips and making my silly posts. It is surprisingly fun to make a fool of yourself on the internet—but it also takes a surprising amount of time behind the scenes. And now I just cannot maintain my instagram habits. I can only handle one pursuit with extremely low feedback to effort ratio—writing novels already holds that place for me.

I love, love, love that I have connected with so many amazing people and authors here—but being on the gram is also messing with my head, you know? I keep seeing other people’s posts and thinking “oh wow, their book is so much better than mine.” I recently gained a bunch of followers, but the algy doesn’t show them my posts. It all just starts to seem like a waste of time. And I know all of you authors out there totally get it. We are all in the same boat here, and so I hope you’ll all understand that I need to dip out.

Writing a novel has many challenges and sometimes writing is cringeworthy or embarrassing. You have to push past that. Writing a funny romantasy poses … unique problems. When I’m writing I have no audience to gauge whether a line is funny or not, so I just go ALL OUT. If I think it is humorous, then I throw it in and let my agent and editors weed out the misses. My humor is a bit questionable at times, but I believe I’m in good company. Thankfully, my editor has a good sense of humor and is immensely indulgent of the weird places I’m willing to go to get a laugh.

You ever see those stories about Jill from Human Resources who quit her job and moved to the south of France to collect sea shells and somehow created a new career? Now everything in their life is *perfect*. I used to soak up those stories and wonder what it would be like to throw caution to the wind and follow a wild dream.

Until I did it.

I quit my cushy, well paid accounting job for the dreams and uncertainty of the publishing world. A month later I was sobbing in my dietitian’s office certain I was an abject failure. See, I always thought that the chain that held me to my desk was holding me back. That list of to-do’s that always grew and never got smaller.

The truth is that I was holding myself back from the life I wanted—because I thought I could do it all. I believed that when I quit my job I’d suddenly have time to write and be super mom and DO ALL THE THINGS. My “to-do” list was even longer than when I was working my 9 to 5!

Friends, there are not that many hours in the day. Whether you have a day job or not, you must recognize that you are human. And you have to account for BEING HUMAN when you choose to follow your dreams. That means that you simply cannot do all the things. You have to choose what to prioritize and where to make sacrifices—because writing takes a lot of time and headspace.

Most of all, be kind to yourself and let your journey be YOUR journey. Keep your eyes on your road and try not to compare yourself to other people. Everyone looks great on social media. Anyone can make it *appear* as if they are crushing it in all aspects of life—but I promise you, they are not.

Well, well. Surprise, surprise, people love smut! I jumped on the trend last week and achieved my highest-performing post to-date. So, all you spicy romance lovers, where does my debut fall on the smut scale?

Ooh I guess we are all talking about closed vs. open door, and clean vs. dirty labels in the romance genre this week. Guess I’ll throw in my two cents! This is an issue that I do feel passionate about. I’m also lucky to be in a family that is pretty liberal and accepting, so I can freely talk about it without fear of repercussions in my personal life. I do want to acknowledge that not everyone is so lucky to speak or write so freely without consequences.

And I also don’t want to dog-pile on the author who said she was feeling convicted by her open-door books. We don’t know what is going on in her life or the environment she’s living in. I grew up surrounded by purity culture and it took me a long time to be comfortable with what I enjoy reading and writing. If I hadn’t married into my husband’s very liberal and supportive family, maybe I never would have been able to accept myself.

And full disclosure: I’m not sharing this on Facebook where it could make my dad uncomfortable 😂

My post yesterday left me a little unsettled. I archived it, but then decided to let it stand alongside this post. Gorgeous pictures of chic vacation homes are all well and good, but it isn’t what I live for. It isn’t why I write. As I walked through the touristy town of Great Barrington with all its high end shops I realized: I don’t want any of it. I don’t need any of it. I don’t need designer clothes. I don’t need to look cool. I don’t need extravagant vacations to far flung lands. All I really need is my family, time & space to create, and YOU. Because my purpose with each work is to tell you that you’re amazing, you’re loveable, our humanity and vulnerabilities unite us. We are all in this together. So, if no one else told you today: You are a treasure and I’m glad you are here.
