I have been more afraid of life than death. To fully make it my own, and open up to how wonderful it can be feels vulnerable. In my decision to say yes to life more and more every day, I have found a dear friend in Death. A friend that encourages me to proactively co-create a life of goodness and magic. My Living Shroud (Leefwade in Dutch) is the medium. It is the piece of fabric I want to be buried in, after I die. But before I go, I want to live with it first, and have it be my witness. The canvas to hold my experiences, including love making, eating, sleeping, and enjoying good company. I have been living with it since the beginning of this year. Not only does it remind me of the fact that death is always there, but it also gives me a way to connect with other people on this subject.

In January was the first public activation during The Portal exhibition @wihhgallery I invited the audience to put intention and pigment into the fabric, with tea and dried flowers (selected by my friend @oceangezina ). And one week ago the piece was part of The Portal take over at the @makeitartworthy church. Where I invited people to embroider the hem with me. Always under one condition: that they wish me a good, healthy, rich, fulfilling, magical, joyful, amazing, long life.

Receiving these blessings means SO much to me, you don’t even know. It brings tears to my eyes, just knowing about all the good wishes these kind people have already bestowed upon my life. Seeing their beautiful stains and stitches in the fabric. The gift of the Living Shroud (Leefwade) goes both ways, as is always the case with true gifts. I let you into my grave, I invite you and your unique expression to become a part of my last physical resting place. I invite you to feel. I invite you to reflect on your own relationship with both life and death. Can you be more proactive in the way you approach both?

Can you wish me a good, healthy, rich, fulfilling, magical, joyful, amazing, long life?

Dead Weight (2023- ungoing)
Dead Weight is an installation exploring how beliefs shape our experience of reality. A life-sized human figure lies buried beneath stones, with negative thoughts and limiting convictions written on them.
Moving through the space, a second figure (dressed in the same black fabric) seems to be carried by helium balloons inscribed with affirming, uplifting phrases. Together, they form a living contrast between heavy stagnation and light movement. The work invites reflection on the invisible narratives we carry, and how they can either hold us down or lift us into new ways of being.

Exhibited at Untamed group exhibition in 2023, and at The Portal exhibition at WIHH in 2026.

The installation grows every time I go beyond my comfort zone, and survival patterns come to the surface. The piece is also used as a tool to start conversations with the community. What thoughts do you recognize? When do they come up? What happens when you listen to them? And what happens when you own yourself, and remember who you are? by @emmykoos

The Altar of Imperfection (2025)
For Peacock Garden, I created an intimate ritual to confront and destroy unattainable beauty ideals. One on one, participants shared their personal vision of “the perfect body,” which I drew on the spot. They were invited to tear, cut, soak, or burn the drawing, with the help of our queen of destruction. To take the meanness we often aim at our innocent body and turn it against the standards that made it wrong for just being the way it is. And have some fun in the meantime 👹

The remnants were placed on a growing altar, honoring the human experience of having insecurities and imperfections, as well as the brave people who choose to love themselves anyway.

A big thank you to every person who was open to this vulnerable exercise! To our destruction queen. To Eli for again and again giving me the space to challenge and express myself, and to Domin for the gorgeous pictures.

In a butoh-inspired, interactive improvisation, @emmykoos and @nadiainnocentia explored the traces of women’s oppression;
how the body carries what is never spoken out loud.

Bound. Seen. Objectified.
And still present. Breathing. Refusing to disappear.
This performance was not about the story of one woman,

but about a collective memory that settles into skin, posture, and silence.

Naaaah.. Op de dansvloer komen vaak mensen naar me toe om me te bedanken voor mijn energie, maar dit keer liep dat uit tot een hele freestyle serenade. Iemand kwam mij na de laatste set een ijsje aanbieden, inclusief bedank-speech en daarna begon hij zelfs spontaan te zingen! 😮

De boodschap van dit lied: Ik zie jou, dat vrije innerlijke kind dat speelt en zichzelf is en daarmee anderen inspireert om dat ook te doen. Blijf dat doen. 💞🙏

Dit is echt niet altijd zo geweest. Als kind wilde ik danseres worden of in het circus, maar gaandeweg verloor ik mezelf. Zoals bij zo veel mensen gebeurt. Tien jaar geleden durfde ik me echt niet zo vrij te bewegen of te kleden als nu. Ik vond het zooo eng om mijn gevoelens en ideeën te delen. En als ik dat deed dacht ik dat dit niet professioneel was. Ha! Little did I know 😌

Expressie is mijn werk. En vrijheid en plezier zijn het directe resultaat. Ik gun dit iedereen. Hoe goed het voelt om te spelen met het creatief uiten van jezelf én dit laten zien aan anderen. De verbinding en het ripple effect dat dit teweegbrengt maakt de wereld zoveel mooier en kleurrijker. Hoe mooi zou het zijn als kinderen dit niet meer hoeven af te leren.

Ik ben nu eigenlijk alles wat ik als kind wilde worden. Tot mijn zomersproetjes aan toe 🥰🙏 En ik ben zo benieuwd.. Wat was jouw droom als kind? Wanneer voel jij die eindeloze energie, plezier en vrijheid? 💖💥🤸‍♂️✨ by @emmykoos
