🧱 File this under #TheBeautyofBrick: Opened in 2017, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech is a masterclass in brick design and application. This exceptional venue is dedicated to celebrating the life and work of the iconic fashion designer, and is located near the Jardin Marjorelle. It provides an immersion into the world of YSL - where art and fashion meet in an intimate and refined atmosphere.

Studio KO, the architectural firm that designed the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, imagined placing brick facades―patterns of solid and empty spaces―on a rougher and more massive structural band, itself placed on a base made of terrazzo (a composite material made of marble fragments and cement, which is polished to give it the shine of natural stone). @studioko x @myslmarrakech

šŸ—ŗļø In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé visited Morocco for the first time. They spent many happy days in Marrakech, and made a habit of visiting several times a year. Yves Saint Laurent drew inspiration for his collections there. Together with Pierre Bergé, they continued to invest actively in Morocco. The famous Jardin Majorelle and the YVES SAINT LAURENT museum in Marrakech are two witnesses to their ā€œMoroccan passionā€.

🧱 File this under #TheBeautyofBrick: In terms of exact materiality, we’re loving everything the team at @orcaliving is creating.Ā

🌿 The artisan-quality of Orca’s hand-made products create deeplyĀ comforting and beautiful outdoor environments - we love theseĀ materials for exterior living spaces. From wood and terrazzo clayĀ pavers to brick and worn clay pavers, Orca is a gorgeous celebration of the art of California garden materials.Ā

And they haven’t stopped there, beyond providing the core foundational materials necessary for an earthy outdoor living space, they’ve crafted gorgeous objects like their lighting, fire pits, vessels, birdhouses, gate hardware and more.

šŸŒž In LA or San Francisco? Visit our friends at theĀ preeminentĀ garden design houseĀ @floragrubbgardens to see Orca’sĀ products in practice.Ā

🧱 File this under #TheBeautyofBrick: This time, we focus on residential application. As we’ve just wrapped our inauguralĀ custom residential project in Denver’s Art District, we have brick on the brain.Ā

[Project 1] Studio Sangath’s fascinating residence outside of Gandhinagar, India - made entirely from brick and terracotta. The home is designedĀ to receive the landscape with open arms, dissolving barriers between shelter and scenery. This home was built from compressed bricks composed of recycled brick kiln waste.Ā

[Project 2] Our new Custom Residential project in Denver’s Art District introduces dimension through rotating traditional brick lay. By turning the brick 45 degrees, we receive a visually-interesting pattern as a modern interpretationĀ of below-eave decoration in this historically-rooted neighborhood. This material terminates into a blackened cedar siding, creating a deep richness in texture and coloration on the home’s exterior. Project done in collaboration with Jonathan Coppin of Elemental Homes.

[Project 3] Another urban project we love is this Laneway House from Toronto; similar to our Denver project, this one incorporates a rotated brick facade, but this time it’sĀ all-encompassing and spontaneously laid in variated striping. This playful massing has a fun illusion that changes with the sun’s movement. Project by WilliamsonĀ Williamson.

[Project 4] The William Tappin House by Matt Gibson Architecture: An incredible study in angularityĀ + artistry.Ā Replete with elaborately carved wooden features and lashings of fair limestone alongside ruby-hued brick, this home has an artist’s touch, from every angle.

ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ File this under #WeLoveLA: We are heartbroken over the devastation we’ve seen unfold in the Los Angeles area this past week. This storied city is a perpetual inspiration for us, it is with that spirit that we celebrate local treasures. We hope these icons remain unharmed and preserved.

🌟 The Eames House, nestled south of Pacific Palisades, is one of those visionary properties, known as Case Study House No. 8.

This was the eighth home designed for Arts & Architecture magazine’s Case Study House Program, launched in Jan 1945. This postwar housing effort spanned nearly twenty years and helped shape Southern California’s language of modernism.

The current building was initially designed as the ā€œBridge Houseā€ by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. Early sketches were published in the Arts & Architecture magazine in 1945, however war-related shortages delayed construction. In 1948, when the material finally arrived, Charles and Ray had fallen in love with the surrounding meadows and reformatted the building using the same material, with the addition of a single steel section.

ā™„ļø The architect had the liberty to choose his client, real or hypothetical, in order to designate the particulars of the house. Charles and Ray proposed that the house they design be ā€œfor a married couple working in design and graphic arts, whose children were no longer living at home.ā€

There is so much to love about this design, our favorite details:

+ The sliding walls and windows give it the trademark versatility and openness of the De Stijl Movement
+ Flexible interior with no strict separation between public and private spaces
+ Exploring unconventional placement
+ Prefabricated materials
+ The multicolored panels and textured inset create a dynamic composition; these panels are functional, providing shifting patterns of light and shade throughout the day
+ Each space is designed to consider it’s utility, i.e. the Studio has a dark room, the Living Room is an unbroken area of space for enjoyment; the Courtyard provides a pause between Residence and Studio

ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ File this under #WeLoveLA: As many of us are seeking ways to support the Los Angeles community, outlets like @americanredcross, @losangelesfiredepartment, @calfund, @mutualaidla and @wckitchen are fantastic places to start. 🤲 Supporting friends and family via @gofundme and @venmo are also great options to provide direct funds. 🐶🐱 The @pasadenahumane is accepting monetary donations to feed and care for 300+ pets they’ve taken in since the Eaton Fire broke out.

šŸ—žļø @laistofficial provided great insight to what really helps during this time: many organizations say donating money and/or signing up to be a trained volunteer (for current and future disasters) is the *best way to help*. LA County Chief Marronne encourages people to visit The Emergency Network Los Angeles (ENLA) website, and @laworksnow for volunteer opportunities across housing, child care, food and specific needs from local nonprofits. It’s important to be tuned in to what is needed, as to not overwhelm organizations with what’s not. Read the full article at our link in bio šŸ‘†

The Stahl House, perched above the Hollywood Hills, is one of those breathtaking properties, known as Case Study House #22.

🌟 Via PBS, among all the houses included in the Case Study program that ran from 1945-1966, #22 is the most accessible to the general public. Located in the Hollywood Hills above Chateau Marmont and just west of Laurel Canyon, the Stahl House is architect Pierre Koenig’s entry into the program, which was designed as a kind of experiment in residential architecture — and, in retrospect, represents perhaps the greatest confluence of modernist architects ever.

Each of the Case Study houses that saw completion (and not all did) were considered model homes — exemplary of the type of housing that was possible during the boom that began as WWII soldiers started returning home from the war and the U.S. entered a period of prosperity. Most of them were built in Los Angeles or just outside of it (like in Thousand Oaks), though there was one as far as Phoenix. The Stahl House is one of the most centrally located L.A. ones — and wasĀ describedĀ upon its completion in 1960 as offering a ā€œhappy combination of site, soil, height and location.ā€

šŸŒž Originally built for client C.H. ā€œBuckā€ Stahl and his wife Carlotta, the 2,300-square-foot house has remained in the Stahl family. To experience those uninterrupted vistas yourself — from inside and out, thanks to huge plate glass walls — and marvel at how the house is cantilevered on a sheer cliff, perhaps even reenacting one of the famous #JuliusShulman photos of the house, you can make a reservation to visit at: stahlhouse.com // #emotifExplores #iconicdesign #midcenturyarchitecture #stahlhouse #casestudyhouse taken in Los Angeles, California by @emotif.us

ā€œOne potential game-changer here is Artificial Intelligence (AI). As AI increasingly takes over repetitive tasks and automates the gathering and interpretation of data across departments, it will break down traditional silos. AI can synthesize data from across an organization, allowing companies to more effectively coordinate efforts around the core drivers of customer value creation. Instead of being limited by functional divides, businesses will be able to focus on optimizing the entire chain of value creation—spanning customer insights, product and business-model innovation, brand positioning, and customer experience.ā€

ā€œCommoditization is inevitable; differentiation must be perpetual. As product differences get copied and commoditized, it’s harder to find sustainable sources of differentiation without continuous product and business model innovation. Businesses that embrace perpetual differentiation as a core strategy will survive and thrive, leveraging innovation and customer-centric value creation to stay ahead of market trends.ā€
