I cleared out my office at Scripps College this week. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to have taught @idaas_claremont ASAM 160 Asian American Women's Experiences for Spring 2026.

As AANHPI Heritage Month closes, we know that Asian American Women's experiences are rarely centered. The Wisdom in our Stories, the transgenerational and transnational explanations for why we feel Nervous, the Terror as Usual of the model minority myth, the Unnatural Disaster of invisibility, the ways we Slay the Dragon and Fight the Tower... That pain + love + reflection = liberation can be found in the stories of our relatives, friends, professors, and ourselves.

It's been so powerful to learn alongside the women in this class, witnessing the brilliance of the Asian American women scholars who have come before us, becoming inspired by the Asian American women changemakers still doing the work day in and day out to create a more just future, and making space for the narratives that are just starting to take shape. taken in Scripps College by @emp_phd

In their most recent book titled “The Message”- Ta-Nehesi Coates writes “in order to care for someone, they must first be seen.”

Last night the @cityofriverside proclaimed that October is Filipino American History Month in Riverside! 🎉 This proclamation declares that FilAms in the City of Riverside are seen and they matter! This is a step towards the collective healing work we all hope to engage in. This year’s FAHM theme is “struggle, resistance, solidarity, and resilience.”

Since 1992, the Filipino American National Historical Society (@fanhs_national) has been celebrating October as Filipino American History Month (FAHM) across the United States. In 2009, the month was first recognized by the U.S. Congress, and in 2015, President Obama hosted the first FAHM celebration at the White House.

The FANHS OCIE chapter was created in 2020 by Dr. Erin Manalo-Pedro, Dr. Mike Manalo-Pedro and Dr. Christine Catipon. FANHS OCIE exists to build an intergenerational community, increase opportunities to learn Filipino American history, document regional history and current events, and promote the use of historical context in research and practice.

Thank you to our region’s trustee, Joe Virata @ejvirata for your advocacy and support to make this proclamation happen today. Thank you to Auntie Dorothy and the late Uncle Fred Cordova for creating a space like FANHS to engage in critical work like this. Thank you to our incredible FANHS OCIE leadership team for your advocacy work. Isang bagsak. ✊🏽 by @emp_phd

20 years ago, I spent my Friday afternoons taking the 134 E / 210 E / 57 S / 71 S / 91 E from my Auntie Mimi's place to my parents' house. I stayed in Glendale on the weekdays so I could finish high school in San Gabriel even though our family had just moved to Riverside. Driving home was typically a solo trip.

This past weekend, my partner drove me, our kiddo, and my parents-in-law up the 60 W / 57 N / 210 W / 134 W to catch the @nurseunseendoc. Watching the documentary in its entirety on the big screen during Filipino American History Month with my family (including my MIL nurse) was surreal. Shout-out to @fanhs.ocie board members who braved the freeways to support! I got to moderate the Q&A with director/producers @michelejosue & @carlovelayo.

I related the questions to the #fahm2024 theme: struggle, resistance, solidarity, resilience. As a newly minted Doktora with a PhD in public health and education, I mentioned that fighting for our lives was connected to resisting our erasure. I acknowledged the scholar-activist cast members with educational ties to the OC-IE region: @uclapaa alum and CPP prof @anthonyocampo.phd; @catherinecenizachoy alum of Pomona College; @jollenelevid & @kevinnadal alumni of UCI. These campuses are currently sites of student-led resistance, speaking out against contemporary physical and epistemological erasure.

The ancestors were "ancestoring" to bring this all together. Catch Nurse Unseen in theaters while you can! It's playing at @laemmleglendale through Thursday, 10/17. The theater is adjacent to Artsakh Avenue, named to commemorate the Armenian struggle. ✊🏽 taken in Laemmle Glendale by @emp_phd

Imagine what it's like growing up invisible.

And then going through 23 years of schooling to come across a chart and a table that summarize that invisibility.

Down with invisibility. ISLAND WOMXN RISE.

See you at @thefordla for @rubyibarra @rockyrivera @faithsantilla @kimmortaltheartist & klassy tmw!

To the U.S. War Department who applied strategies from reconstruction era industrial education for emancipated Black people and cultural deprivation in Indian boarding schools for Indigenous Peoples on Turtle Island in their implementation of colonial schooling in the Philippines in the early 1900s:

You said the Filipino would never be a philosopher or scientist. You said our superstitious culture must be overcome. You said our "intellectual faculties may become comparatively inferior" as adults.

Yet here we are: Pinay Doktoras. We are a community of scholars whose research seeks to repair the multigenerational harms caused by imperialism, colonialism, racism, capitalism, ableism, sexism, and heterosexism.

My worlds collided last night at @tiendaannightmarket, demonstrating the vast network and collective effort it takes to support a doktora.

Shout-out to PaGASA at UCLA for making sure we found each other when I first started grad school a decade ago. Shout-out to my public health mentees who boldy use their platforms to advocate for healthier communities. Shout-out to my community who remind me to critique harmful systems while protecting/preserving our spirit through compassion for the people. Shout-out to my fellow Cal Poly Pomona alumni for creating spaces to reunite with our community.

Maraming salamat po kayo. taken in KIN Unified Healing by @emp_phd
