Hi, I’m Shelley — and my heart for this work runs deep. 💙

My connection to Parkinson’s started with my grandfather, and then my mom, who was diagnosed at age 48. For years, I’ve been a group fitness instructor and Rock Steady Boxing coach, helping people with Parkinson’s build strength, balance, mobility, and a sense of hope — right here in our local community.

I know firsthand that staying active, having fun, and feeling supported can make all the difference — especially when you’re facing a diagnosis that feels so overwhelming!

I believe everyone deserves to see what’s still possible.
No fancy equipment needed, no big gym required — just a chair and a good dose of encouragement!

I’m excited to share more resources to help those with Parkinson’s and their caregivers. Stay tuned — we’re just getting started. 💪✚

Sometimes it’s not about understanding exactly what someone is going through. It’s about acknowledging that you may only be seeing a small part of their struggle. 💙

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐧’𝐬, 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝. Real thoughts. Real feelings. Real life.

Can you relate?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲. 𝐀 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭. 𝐀 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐀. 𝐀 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.

Maybe yesterday you were thinking about everything you have to do this week.

The appointments. The responsibilities. The to-do list. The uncertainty of how you’re going to feel.

But here’s your Monday reminder:

𝐘𝐚𝐮 𝐝𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐚 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐀𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐀 𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐲.

You don’t have to make up for what you didn’t accomplish last week.

And you certainly don’t have to have it all figured out by Monday morning.

Especially when you’re living with Parkinson’s, and some days your body has a different plan than your mind.

So today, start small.

Move your body. Take a deep breath. Do something that makes you smile. Give yourself something to look forward to.

And remember, a fresh start doesn’t require a perfect day.

𝐈𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧.

Here’s to a new week, new possibilities, and finding a little momentum wherever you can.

💙𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲!

What’s in a name? 💊

Sometimes there’s a pretty interesting story behind the name of a medication.

But 𝐉𝐔𝐕𝐌𝐎?🀔
I have a theory

𝐘𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐊𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭?

Pharmacist speculation only 😉 — but what do YOU think?

Some Mondays, motivation just isn’t there.

And with Parkinson’s, that can be more than simply “not feeling like it.” Apathy is a very real non-motor symptom.

So today, don’t wait for motivation.

Put on the shoes.
Stand up from the chair.
Walk to the mailbox.
Turn on one song and move until it ends.
Do five sit-to-stands.

Make the first step ridiculously small.

Because sometimes we think motivation creates movement.

But sometimes?

𝐌𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧.🩵

That’s your Monday Momentum.

Just start.

Shelley @empoweredwithparkinsons , you are an absolute rockstar. I'm having an "MSESSY" kind of day messing up my posts so I just took a video of such important information (remix wasn't loading). Recently when I was doing my monthly caregiving for my uncle in San Diego, I saw something about this. Things got a little hectic and I didn't look into it. What I needed was someone like you to explain it the way you do. With your incredible background and knowledge for people who have no medical background at all. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible information. In addition, it's a reminder what fundraising does. None of these things were available when my dad was alive. None of the medications you even mentioned were available for my dad. And now it seems like options continue to come. We can't do that with that fundraising. We can't do that without fully understanding these new medications. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this. And this is why I call you a rockstar ⭐
Just another reason to light a fire under me to continue to aspire to be an amazing fundraiser 🧡 by @empoweredwithparkinsons

My two cents on JUVMO (tavapadon).💊
Thanks for listening.👂
Not medical advice.
Consult your neurologist or MDS for more information.👚🏻‍⚕🏚

𝐖𝐡𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐚 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠?🧠🙌

This week we worked on bilateral coordination, hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity—and there was a LOT more happening here than just drawing lines on stickers.

Each color or number had a specific rule. The challenge? 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐀 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐊𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐊𝐞.

So the brain had to see the information, remember the rule, make a decision, send instructions to 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐲 and coordinate the movement.

Then we added finger exercises that required different movements from each hand—another deceptively simple challenge!

For people with Parkinson’s, I love activities that combine 𝐊𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭 + 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐠 + 𝐜𝐚𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 because everyday life rarely asks us to do just one thing at a time.

And we laughed. We messed up. We tried again.
𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞—𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧.

Best part?

A few sheets of stickers.
Some markers.
A little creativity.

𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐀𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧.😂

You don’t need fancy equipment to challenge your brain and body. You just need to give them something 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐚 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭. 🩵

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐊𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟.

“𝐈’𝐊 𝐧𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐚𝐮.”

I heard your question.

I’m listening to what you’re saying.

And I may even know exactly what I want to say back.

𝐈 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐊𝐞.

Parkinson’s can affect more than movement we can see. It can also affect thinking speed and the ability to process information and formulate a response.

So that pause after you ask me a question?

It doesn’t necessarily mean I wasn’t listening.

It doesn’t mean I’m confused.

It doesn’t mean I’m not interested in the conversation.

And it doesn’t mean I need someone to answer for me.

𝐒𝐚𝐊𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐊𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐬𝐢𝐊𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬.

Those few seconds can feel VERY long to the person waiting for an answer.

So you ask the question again.

Or reword it.

Or start giving me choices.

Or—you know the one—𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐊𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐞.

And suddenly my brain is trying to process even MORE information.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is simply

𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭.

Give me a moment to find the words.

Let me finish my thought.

Let me participate in the conversation at my own pace.

Because I’m still here.

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐀𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐚𝐮.🩵

If you live with Parkinson’s, does this one hit home?

And if you love someone with Parkinson’s, maybe the next time there’s a pause, try giving them just a few more seconds. 🩵
