VIETNAM I - Hanoi and Sapa

Vietnam is known for its landscapes, skilled craftmanship, kind people, food and COFFEE!!!! This coffee is an 'egg coffee' which is a meringue like whipped egg on top of a coffee. Very sweet but quite good.

Mango, a Black Hmong woman, guided me through the rice paddy terraces of her home in Sapa. The Black Hmong people are an ethnic group, of which there are 54 in vietnam making it one of the most diverse places in the world. Beautifully, the different groups distinguish themselves with traditional costumes. The Black Hmong get their name from the deep indigo stained clothing of which the region is known for. Every house has deep blue fabrics hanging up to dry after an extensive dyeing process. This region (and Vietnam in general) is also home to some very skilled clothes makers and embroiderers.

The water contraption uses the river to dehusk the rice. Every family grows their own rice and wealth can be represented by how many terraces your family owns. There is a peaceful and connected feel to this place, with neighbours helping eachother to farm their paddies. However Mango did speak of a darker side, with young marriages and high rates of domestic violence means some women 'spend more time in the hospital than home'. The trekking guides, from what I saw, are all women. Mango said the men are too shy to talk English so it's a women's job, providing them income and independence.

2 day slow boat from thailand to laos. most notable things was how remote some families are living along the mekong river. we would drop of supplies to seemingly nowhere but the kids would run down to get it. heartbreaking to see the huge volumes of rubbish in the water. some people on the boat even finished their food and chucked the wrapping straight over into the water. the people that live here wash their clothes, catch fish and bathe in this water. i enjoyed a wordless game of cards w strangers over a roaring engine.

laos is also the most heavily bombed country in the world! the US dropped the equivalent of a plane load of bombs every 8 minutes for 9 years straight. the collection of plates etc. were belongings of people forced to live in caves to avoid the heavy bombing. today unexploded bombs mean you cannot go off trail as it continues to take lives. laos is an absolutely stunning country, but it highlighted the privileged of my home country where the rivers are clean and i can roam barefoot wherever i like (there are clean rivers, just the mekong and populated/touristed areas were tough to see).

highlight was sleeping under the stars on the mountain and a foggy bamboo forest. we went to bed with lightning striking in the distance and thunder rumbling. surely not... 3am said surely yes..

and i swam in a pool in a cave.

decided to try paramotoring as its what vang vieng is renown for. that selfie is all i took because i was genuinely so terrified and focussed on praying for it to end. so the last video is from my friend so you can see.

CHIANG MAI PART II

I got to go on a day trip to Doi Inthanon National Park. This was top of my list because the photos of the king and queen Pagodas are insane (look it up trust). It was pretty foggy but I was emotional to be there after looking at pictures of them for half a year! Got to do a wee walk through the bush to the highest point in Thailand. I think the altitude was getting me a bit... or potentially the $5 cigs (kidding kidding kidding).

Learned that yoga is hard and I don't like it much, and made a silver ring that you can engrave with patterns!!

Thank you chiang maiiiii by @emzdoings

CHIANG MAI PART I

Yahoooo I had heard Northern Thailand was a very special place and the rumours are true. The climate is much less hot and humid, and although its the second largest city in Thailand there is a relaxed, chilled atmosphere. This is the first place I was able to meet some friends yay..

We hiked Doi Suthep to find a temple at the top of the hill, overlooking the city.

Khao soi is a regional dish and it bangs the hardest out of anything I have tried so far. Flavourful mild broth with noodles and chicken, topped with crispy noodles, lime, red onion and pickled cabbage?

There is a huge art scene here, with many artisanal activities or goodies to peruse. I wandered into this painters shop and told him this was my favourite painting. He told me it was of Nelson, New Zealand and I walked home with tears in my eyes. I didn't expect to miss home so much! But I am very happy to be here.

The sticky waterfalls are made of limestone so you can clamber up them.

Theres a strong reggae and jazz scene too! by @emzdoings

BANGKOK! 👑🥭🎆🌃🚖🐈💫🍜

elaborate glittering temples on every corner, bells tinkling as people claim their good luck, bustling markets with a million smells, mainly food you don't recognise and petrol, huge crowds snaking through streets lined with vendors selling more food than you could imagine, motorbikes weaving their way through people on the pavement, dragons on sticks and cards celebrating entry into the year of the horse.

Wat Arun is a huge temple decorated with chinese ceramics and sea shells. I got caught in a rainstorm on the way here, which was fantastic until I got there and found everyone dressed to the nines doing photo shoots. giving BALD WET RAT AND CHOPPED!! alas

The view from Golden Mount showed the stunning division between old city, full to the brim with temples and flea markets, and the skyscraper skyline of new city. I tried to go for sunset but apparently the sun sets before the official time due to smog, oops. still pretty though!!

I loved wandering in a daze through the insanely busy markets, and especially the quieter moments with a coffee in the park. After the people finish work and school they come to the park, where squirrels clamber nervously up trees and crows warn you not to get too close, to exercise, do homework, rest and socialise. Walking home kids play games in the alleys, men smoke on porches, little cats sneak around mischievously and people pack up their stalls. A white heron with a steezy rats tail hairstyle grazes peacefully in the pond.

I explored the city mostly by myself, a little too shy and nervous at this stage to strike up much conversation, but its easy to see this is a city with a million hidden gems to uncover. I look forward to returning and exploring a bit deeper on the way back! taken in Bangkok by @emzdoings

SCRAN OF THE DAY

1. coconut balls 6/10

Sweet (but not so sweet) coconut cream balls were yum, soft, creamy and fun looking. one flavour spring onion and the other corn. ¥50 (nzd 2.50). had to try cause anthony bourdain did it once on youtube. losing points because i couldnt eat them all as i dont fiend sweet stuff, and gotta leave room to improve.

2. noodle soup 8/10

¥50. had been craving noodle soup so this hit the spot. was delicate and flavourful and the man serving me was very sweet. losing points cause i need more veges, could have been slightly more flavourful. i sweat my balls off eating this

3. fishball soup 6/10

¥60. chinatown on chinese new year. realised i like to eat in a quiet place out of the way of everybody and wont buy something if theres a line. twice today walked round for a few hours saying 'ill get the next one' until i realise bangkok has twice as many people as the entire homeland. dang. this one was the first to slightly push me as there was an uncertain squishy thing and im not the hugest fan of fish balls texturally. did the job, pretty nice, chur. taken in Bangkok by @emzdoings
