๐Ÿ”ฅ Think Brain in F.L.A.M.E.S ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Encephalitis can affect anyone โ€” and early recognition can save lives.

Remember the signs with F.L.A.M.E.S:
๐Ÿฉบ F โ€“ Flu-like symptoms
๐Ÿ˜ด L โ€“ Loss of consciousness
๐Ÿค• A โ€“ Acute headache
๐Ÿง  M โ€“ Memory problems
๐Ÿ’ญ E โ€“ Emotional or behavioural changes
โšก S โ€“ Seizures

If you notice these symptoms, seek urgent medical attention. Early diagnosis and treatment matter.

New guidance from German experts sets out how psychiatric services should look for autoimmune encephalitis (AE). AE is a real and treatable cause of psychiatric illness, but itโ€™s rare, and the experts warn that it can be overdiagnosed too.

Swipe through to see the recommended approach: spotting warning signs, investigating, testing carefully and reviewing cases as a team.

Two of the authors, Professor Carsten Finke and Professor Frank Leypoldt, are members of our Scientific Advisory Panel.

Think broadly. Test carefully. Interpret in context.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Fran is taking on the Leeds Half Marathon and her first ever marathon, the Yorkshire Altra, all in support of Encephalitis International ๐Ÿ’™

Franโ€™s brother, Will, was affected by encephalitis in 1999, and it changed the rest of his life. She still remembers the multiple diagnoses and uncertainty at the time, and knows how damaging delays in getting the right treatment can be. The effects of a brain injury can be devastating. ๐Ÿง

By running for Encephalitis International, Fran hopes to raise vital funds and awareness of this often poorly recognised condition, helping improve the lives of those affected.

Good luck, Fran, weโ€™ll be cheering you on! ๐Ÿ‘

Through ShareGift, donated shares are pooled together and sold, with the proceeds going to charities. If you decide to donate, just mention Encephalitis International so your gift supports our work with people affected by encephalitis. ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿง  New blog: Has medicine forgotten how to read?
โ€œBefore it was a science of language, semiotics was the science of symptoms.โ€

๐Ÿฉบ Writing in Psychology Today, Encephalitis Internationalโ€™s Prav Prathapan looks at medical semiotics, the old clinical skill of reading signs and symptoms, and asks why it matters more than ever as AI changes healthcare.

๐Ÿค– AI is getting better and better at linking findings to diagnoses. What it canโ€™t do is understand what those results mean for the person living with them.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prav argues that clinicians should treat AI outputs as signs to interpret, not final verdicts. He highlights the importance the of recording the patientโ€™s story, alongside the data.
