What you're building is always revealing what you value.

Not the values written on the wall, but the ones reflected in your decisions.

What gets your attention, your time, who gets a seat at the table, what you're willing to say no to, how quickly you're willing to grow, what you're willing to protect when growth demands more...

You can say you value creativity and create a culture where everything has to be efficient, or that you value freedom and build a business that requires you to be available at all hours.

Eventually, what you build tells the truth about what you value.

And that's why brand strategy goes deeper than messaging or visual identity.

Your brand isn't just what you say about yourself.
It's the expression of the decisions you're making underneath it.

So the question isn't simply:
“What do we want our brand to say?”

It's:
“What do we want the way we build to reveal?”

Because the most compelling brands aren't performing their values.

They're living them.

Sometimes the organization grows beyond the vision that first built it.

Not because the vision was wrong.

Because the organization lived into it.

It grew. Its people changed. Its influence expanded. And somewhere along the way, what once felt like a clear picture of the future can begin to feel a little too small for what the organization has become.

I think this is one of the more complicated seasons for a founder.

There can be a tendency to hold tightly to what worked - to the original vision, the original way of doing things, even the original version of the brand - because those things carry so much history.

But honoring the past doesn't mean building the future around it.

Sometimes the work is to go back to the foundation and ask what it's becoming and what the next season will require.

That kind of reflection can be uncomfortable.
But it can also be where the next chapter begins.

Because growth isn't always about adding more.

Sometimes it's about giving the organization permission to become what it has been growing toward all along.

Tomorrow is October 1st.
I find myself reflecting over the year so far, as we are suddenly drawing quite near to the end of the year. (Wasn't the beginning of summer just yesterday??)

This year has been anything but the expected. At some point, I stopped making plans and timelines because they're arbitrary and absolutely nothing has been working as I intended. And somehow, that has been for the best.

Here are a few of the things I have learned thus far:

✨ Clarity doesn't come with stopping and trying to figure it out.
Actually - quite the opposite. I'm finding that clarity is the result of momentum, of risk, and trying various opportunities to find out what fits. Stopping leads to analysis paralysis, in my experience. So, keep moving forward and you'll know when it becomes clear.

✨ Success doesn't have one definition. Entrepreneurs are notorious for their identities to be so wrapped up in their ventures - so when things aren't working as they intended, it becomes a direct reflection of their self worth/value. But success isn't just increasing revenue and sales. It can be the depth of community and relationships around you, the freedom of time for adventures and hobbies, the ability to take weekends to spend with family and friends, and the list goes on. So what is success to you?

✨ You can outgrow something without it having been wrong. Relationships. Projects. Business. Seasons. Places. Some of the worst seasons of my life have taught me the greatest lessons. Friendships have ended because they simply weren't meant for the next season - not because they were wrong in the first place. Clients were removed because they didn't align anymore, but it was a great fit to begin with.

So much of life, I find, isn't about "becoming" - it's more about the "unbecoming". Meaning, it's shedding the things that don't serve us to truly just be ourselves. For me, this year has been an intensive season of doing just that.

Thank you, @deschuteswomeninbusiness. Last night was inspiring, to say the least. It was incredible to be in a room full of women pursuing their passions, leading in a variety of industries around Central Oregon.

“Slowing down feels counterculture.” There were so many takeaways from the evening - all around the theme of “Go Slow to Go Fast.” Excited to attend future events! taken in Open Space Event Studios by @encompassedco

Your brand can't outpace the strategy beneath it.

A website can be redesigned, messaging refined, visuals elevated, and campaign can be beautifully executed.

But those are expressions of the brand - not the brand itself. This is branding.

The brand is what exists underneath.

It's the identity of the organization. The way it sees the world. The people it exists for. What makes it distinct. Where it's going. What it believes is worth building.

And strategy gives all of that direction.

Without it, branding can become a series of disconnected decisions - each one trying to communicate something that hasn't been clearly defined underneath.

That's why brand strategy comes before branding.

Not because the creative work is less important.

Because the creative work becomes more meaningful when it has something real to express.

The goal isn't to create a brand that simply looks aligned.

It's to build the clarity underneath it that makes alignment possible in the first place.

A place has a story before you ever put a camera in your hand.

The work is figuring out how to tell it.

For @waypointbendhotel in Bend, that meant looking beyond the rooms and capturing the experience that happens around them - the drinks at Hosmer Bar, a soak in the hot tub, the ease of bringing your dog along, and the details that make the hotel feel distinctly Bend.

The goal wasn't to create a collection of beautiful footage.

It was to create a body of visual content that communicates what it feels like to be there.

That's the difference between capturing a brand and directing its story.

Strategic creative direction considers what needs to be communicated, who needs to feel it, and how each visual can contribute to the larger brand experience.

Because when the right story is being told, the content doesn't just show people what you offer.

It gives them a reason to imagine themselves there.

Trends come and go. Your brand shouldn't have to become something different every time they do.

The strongest brands know what is worth evolving and what is worth holding onto.

They understand their identity deeply enough to recognize when something genuinely fits - and when it's simply popular.

Because when a brand is rooted in something true, it doesn't need to borrow relevance from what's happening around it.

It can adapt without losing itself, evolve without abandoning what makes it distinct, and stay current without becoming a reflection of everyone else.

The goal isn't to build a brand that looks relevant today. It's to build one that remains true as everything around it changes.

Some beers are good. Some beers make you want another batch.

Meet Ale of Green Gables - a playful nod to Anne of Green Gables and a red ale that ended up becoming one of the unexpected favorites of the series.

I shared a few bottles with a friend, and about a week later, I got a text asking when there would be more.

Apparently, it made an impression.

It made one on me, too. This was the beer that kicked off a genuine love of red ales, which I definitely didn't see coming when this homebrewing experiment began.

Early on, we also made an important discovery:

Milk makes an excellent bottle-label adhesive.

Just sticky enough to keep the labels on. Easy enough to wash off when it was time to reuse the bottles for the next batch.

And honestly, that's part of what has made this series so much fun - trying something new, making a few discoveries along the way, and occasionally finding something worth making again.

Before stepping into another season of growth, it’s worth taking a moment to look at what you’re building from.

Not because everything needs to change, but because growth has a way of revealing what needs attention.

✨Capacity
Can your organization actually hold the growth you’re pursuing? Look at your team, systems, leadership, time, and resources. Growth that consistently stretches everything to the breaking point isn’t necessarily healthy growth.

✨Goals
Are you still moving toward the things that matter most? More opportunity doesn’t always mean more alignment. Revisit what you’re actually trying to build - and let that determine what deserves your attention.

✨Audience
Are you still clear about who you’re building for? As an organization evolves, the people it serves and the way it serves them can evolve, too. Make sure you’re still speaking to the people you most want to reach.

✨Your Difference
What makes your organization distinct? Growth is a good time to revisit the perspective, approach, experience, or point of view that makes your organization worth choosing. Don’t let growth smooth out what makes you different.

✨Your Brand
Does the brand reflect the organization you’re becoming? Sometimes an organization evolves long before its brand catches up. Your messaging, visuals, website, and experience should tell the same story as the organization behind them.

Before asking, “What’s next?”

It may be worth asking, “What needs to be strengthened before we get there?”

Because the next season deserves more than a bigger vision.

It deserves a foundation that can hold it.

There’s something compelling about photographing someone who is completely immersed in the work they’re called to do.

These behind-the-scenes images were taken while filming an e-course with Scott Flora, founder and CEO of @coreign.kingdom, for their learning portal.

Co-Reign is built around a different kind of partnership - not coaching or consulting, but prophetic intercession: a dedicated team running alongside business leaders, praying specifically over their businesses, their teams, and the seasons they’re navigating.

The emphasis these images highlight is that they capture something that can be difficult to communicate through words alone: the passion Scott brings to the work.

There’s an intensity and conviction in the way he teaches.

Sometimes the most powerful brand images aren't the ones where everything is perfectly posed.

They're the ones where you catch someone fully engaged in what they were made to do.

So... Who decided what success is supposed to look like?

Somewhere along the way, success became synonymous with more.

More revenue. More growth. More recognition. A bigger business. A fuller calendar.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting those things. But I think it’s worth asking a different question:

What do you actually value?

Because the way you define success will inevitably reveal what you value.

If you value freedom, success probably isn't a business that requires you to be available 24/7.

If you value rest, success might look like having weekends that actually belong to you.

If you value relationships, success might mean building a team and a business at the pace that allows trust and connection to develop.

If you value time with your family, success may include the ability to take the trip, make the memory, or simply be there.

If you value creativity, success might mean having enough margin to pursue the projects that don't fit neatly into a revenue goal.

And if you value meaningful work, success may have less to do with how much you can take on and more to do with whether the work you're choosing still feels aligned with where you're going.

When your success becomes your identity, every setback becomes personal.

A slower season feels like failure. A project that doesn't work out can feel like a reflection of your ability. Not hitting revenue goals hits your self-confidence as a business owner.

But maybe success was never meant to be a fixed destination.

Maybe it gets to evolve as your values, your life, and your vision evolve.

Growth can be part of success. Financial health can be part of success.

But they don't have to be the whole definition.

What you build should reflect what you value. And perhaps success is simply having the courage to build accordingly.

There is a kind of clarity that only comes when you stop trying to find it.

Stepping back can feel counterintuitive when there is always something that could be done. Another decision to make. Another idea to pursue. Another thing that needs your attention.

But distance changes perspective.

Sometimes you need to step far enough away from the work to see what you've been too close to notice. To recognize what is still working, what no longer fits, and what may be asking to change.

I've found some of the most important decisions don't happen in the middle of doing.

They happen in the space around it.

Stepping back isn't stepping away from the vision. Sometimes it's how you see it more clearly.

And sometimes the most productive thing a founder can do is create enough space to see what comes next.
