Hello comunidad/community!
We are excited to share this call out to conscious visual artists as we approach the 23rd Annual Enero Zapatista! Here in Kumeyaay territory, we continue to celebrate the 1994 Zapatista uprising in Chiapas and their development of autonomy. Zapatismo is a shared vision with which we continue to walk, as we try to bring a more unified world into being by practicing the seven principles to be more intentional in our work and the way we lead our lives.

2027 Enero Zapatista Theme:  Our Futures Are/Our Neighbors: Searching for Life and Dignity/Nuestros Futuros Son Nuestros Vecinos: Buscando Vida y Dignidad

We are people tasking ourselves with decolonization, re-learning, and re-imagining a world free, while also surviving within the current capitalist, settler colonialist, and carceral reality. We recognize the means by which violent structures are maintained is through convincing us to remain numb, afraid, and hopeless. Refusing resignation requires daring to keep searching for the disappeared, to build relationships with our neighbors, and to imagine different futures that support life.

(Read full statement of theme: QR code or URL)

We encourage you to submit art piece(s) that address the above theme and represent the Zapatista spirit of autonomy. Today, the struggle continues and we stand in solidarity with all people worldwide who are searching for life and dignity.

Artwork will be showcased at the Centro Cultural de la Raza from January 8, 2027 to February 21, 2027.

Please complete and submit this art submission form below by  5:00 pm December 1, 2026. We will notify artists whose pieces have been selected for inclusion on December 10, 2026.

See the end of this form for the DROP OFF and PICK UP dates, guidelines and requirements.

If you have any questions, please email us at CompArteSD@gmail.com

Looking forward to another amazing Enero!

In solidarity,

Our monthly political education book reading Friday May 8th 6-8pm @centrocultural. Reading….

To Our Friends
by The Invisible Committee
Translated by Robert Hurley

“During the seven years that separate The Coming Insurrection from To Our Friends, the agents of the Invisible Committee have continued to fight, to organize, to transport themselves to the four corners of the world, to wherever the fires were lit, and to debate with comrades of every tendency and every country. Thus To Our Friends is written at the experiential level, in connection with that general movement. Its words issue from the turmoil and are addressed to those who still believe sufficiently in life to fight as a consequence.

To Our Friends is a report on the state of the world and of the movement, a piece of writing that’s essentially strategic and openly partisan. Its political ambition is immodest: to produce a shared understanding of the epoch, in spite of the extreme confusion of the present.” Full text in QR code.

Reading some chapters, copies will be provided, only in person. #politicaleducation #pensamientocritico by @enerozapatista

January has been the month of resistance and celebration of existence.

We started the new year commemorating the 1994 Zapatista uprising with bike patrol in City Heights in the early stormy morning. Bread Bloc fed us warm hearty chili—a reminder that community and care sustain us in struggle. (@enerozapatista )

Unfortunately just one week into the new year, Minneapolis resident Renee Good was murdered by a federal agent. Her death ignited protests and outrage across the country, including in San Diego.

A few weeks later, Alex Pretti was shot and killed by a federal Customs and Border Protection agent, while trying to protect a community member. Communities mobilized in response—calling for justice, accountability, and an end to the violence of unchecked federal power. More protests erupted; @sd.criticalmass called for a protest ride against ICE. In solidarity with a Minneapolis @angrycatfish ‘s call for a nationwide unity ride in Alex’s honor, we organized a ride here in San Diego.

With all this rage and the fight against fascism, we gather in community to celebrate our resilience and existence in the face of the storm.
