Custom board builders can definitely help your surfing & here’s my version. When I wanted a gunnier board for winter I called Tyler. “It needs to be more pulled in than the gliders I usually ride, & lots of float to deal with our winter 5mils. Plus a little weight to cut through our winter winds, chop & texture.”
Tyler had just the board, the 10’ Northsider. Same board we all saw the pics & videos of him riding no leash at the El Segundo jetty.
The following Christmas, the board put me to the test. Surfing on Friday afternoon, the day of Christmas Eve, it went a solid 14-16. Somehow had a nearly dry hair paddle out & began to realize I might have done the stupidest thing of my life. Turned on a bomb setting up in front of the Neptune Ave street sign. Made the drop & the board just rocketed. Allowing me to rise & fall generating more acceleration. From south of blue roof to north of crack jetty at Monmouth in a blur. I was 1 & done & back in my car in 20 minutes. And yes, it’s Jersey so I had a leash.

What a weekend! Got to surf my favorite wave with a handful of folks and somehow managed to end up in the top 5 of 28 absolute hammers! Had a blast from the past kind of morning hanging out with @hotdoggerchampionships & @jonhalllovesyou !! It was great seeing you Ed Factor. I grew up with the Ed Factor and this dude used to get a little wild back in the day hahaha!!

I’m super proud of you bro. The changes you made so long ago really stuck and you’re a true inspiration to me and many others. I’m super stoked you’re working and helping out Tyler too. He’s always been mentor and inspiration to me as well 🙏🏼🫡

Riddler Revisited.

Wowsa. I’m digesting my new Riddler. Since we all saw that Copper Penny Tyler at Just Longboards — 25 years ago or so—I’ve always wanted a Ty. (why I picked up in my Galaxie—I’ve have had since 19) I’ve ridden for a couple of different shapers, one in particular that specializes in ‘60s-stylized surfboard equipment. Yes, the boards may be beautiful, but have you really seen footage of them being truly hotdogged — and I’ll take it one step further…hotdogged in shitty local crap beach break? Maybe under the feet of a gifted few. Usually, performance is shown in hold-your-hand point breaks or longboard bunny slopes.

Originally, Tyler wanted to get me on a Sleek Zeke, but a Riddler ended up in the mix when it came back too big for another team guy. Growing up watching Green Riddler footage, you knew the board was something special. It’s a model that has a lot going on. I’ve heard the criticism, “it’s a one-trick pony, it’s just a 422, it doesn’t rotate — bull shit.” Every design aspect functions for a reason, and once you figure out what each part of the board does, it all makes sense. The nose lift is insane. I’ve never ridden a longboard that wraps so easily around a cutback or “takes it to it” off the lip. Get up three-quarters of the way to the nose and pump — you’re making any section. In my mind, it’s the ultimate South Bay longboard. The hips are a respectful nod to the Jacobs 422 and Tyler’s one of the few with Hap’s clearance to do it — but they are completely different boards.

Tyler asked me what color and style Riddler I wanted. I said pink and flamboyant, and green weight. While yes, other surfboard makers dabble in hotcoat color work, you’ve got to remember Tyler’s been doing this since the Bush Administration. So to quote Mr. Joel Tudor: hold my beer. @joeljitsu When you see the intricacies of his colorwork up close, you’ll get it.
