I’ve spent most of my life in school, but the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that learning never stops.

I’m Dr. Adam Bush—a biomedical engineering professor and imaging scientist, but also a student, teacher, mentor, husband, dad, Black man, and hobby pitmaster.

Professionally, I work to see the unseen through physics and physiology. Personally, I’m still figuring things out like everyone else.

Great ideas don’t run on curiosity alone.
Research funding provides the people, time, equipment, supplies, and experiments needed to push the edge of human knowledge forward.
But the fuel is limited, and no one knows in advance which ideas will succeed, fail, or eventually change the world.
So how would you distribute it: fund the safest ideas, bet on the boldest, or give more ideas a chance? Let politicians decide or the scientists who ultimately design, conduct and review it?

Or both?

What if doctors could see how well your kidneys are functioning, without blood samples, needles, radiation, or injections?

We’re working toward that future.

In our new paper in NMR in Biomedicine, we show that non-contrast MRI measurements of kidney blood flow and cortical thickness provide complementary information about kidney function.

Together, these measurements enabled an image-based estimate of eGFR that performed well when prospectively tested in a new group of healthy adults.

Enabling individual kidney function estimates non-invasively.

This is an early proof of concept, but it raises an important possibility: imaging may one day supplement blood tests with safer, less confounded, and more complete measurements of kidney health.

Congratulations to first author Emily Powell and our collaborative team: Corina Margain, Jiachen Wang, Joel Adler, and Alexandra Clark.

This work was supported in part by R01EB033916, which was terminated prematurely due to federal changes on DEI policy. That support ended but our commitment to improving human health with imaging is unwavering.

I first came to USC as Adam the student. Years later, I returned as Professor Bush.

Getting invited back to speak and celebrate 50 years of USC Biomedical Engineering was both surreal and deeply meaningful. I had a chance to reconnect with old friends and mentors, meet new ones, and share a few lessons from the journey.

Grateful for the people and the place that helped shape the scientist, teacher, and person I became.

Happy 50th, USC BME. Fight On! ✌🏾
