Hey Miners!! ⛏️💙🧡 Happy Homecoming Week!!!

Let’s throw it back to our roots as the College of Mines and Metallurgy! 🏛️⚒️

To celebrate, the Metallurgy Department put their expertise to the test and conducted an experiment to determine what metals make up the Mr. and Ms. UTEP crowns 👑🔬

We love seeing how UTEP’s rich history and roots in metallurgy and mining continue to be incorporated into the university today! 🧡💙

Here’s to celebrating where we came from, where we are, and where we’re headed!

Check out the metallurgical engineering and mining engineering programs below ⬇️ 👀

2026 Gold Nugget recipient Juan Sanchez ’94, ’96 knew he wanted to be an engineer early on, but it was at UTEP where he discovered his path in metallurgical engineering.

A first-generation college student, Sanchez earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from what is now known as the Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering before beginning a career with mining company Phelps Dodge, now Freeport-McMoRan. Over the past 30 years, he has advanced from process engineer to director of customer technical marketing while helping bridge technical expertise, operations and customer relationships across the United States and Mexico.

“The opportunities I received at UTEP shaped my career and inspired me to give back. Supporting students and strengthening partnerships between the university and industry is one way I can help the next generation of engineers succeed,” Sanchez said.

He remains closely connected to UTEP through mentorship, student recruitment and service on the Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering Industry Advisory Board, helping strengthen opportunities for future engineers.
