“In Britain in 2026, debates about the body are far from abstract. The National Health Service faces mounting pressure from cuts, outsourcing, and creeping privatisation. Food banks are part of everyday life for hundreds of thousands […] Long-documented health inequalities are widening, life expectancy varies dramatically by postcode, and for many working-class people stress and mental health problems are intensified by both work and lack of work. […]
GRASS has never coupled its issues with fixed themes before. But as I was reading through the submissions for this edition, a common thread emerged: the body being tested, policed, medicated, exhausted and pushed beyond what it is able to endure.”

FIELD OF VIEW #21 - Joelle Taylor 🌿
“If you think about all the great books, were they ones that told you what the answer was, or are they ones that kind of haunt you because you slowly begin to realise what the answer is? And that is pure activism.”

We spoke to @jtaylortrash about writing from a place of risk, how haunting a reader can become an act of activism, and the Art Deco cinema at the edge of the Lancashire Moors that inspired her next book.

FIELD OF VIEW #19 - Ella Frears 🌿

“The way that I could control the telling of this thing in a way that gave me agency over that experience, even at 10, 11, 12 years old, felt very powerful. […] And I think that was the first writing l ever did.”

We spoke to @ellafrears about taking agency over the telling of adverse experiences, the self/not self, and moments of odd intimacy with strangers.

FIELD OF VIEW #18 – Brenock O’Connor 🌿
“There’s the music industry, then there’s the music world. If the music industry doesn’t find profit in it, it won’t give it the time of day - that doesn’t mean the scene can’t give it the time of day”.

We spoke to @brenockoconnor about highs and lows, curating a community that cares for each other and where he goes to feel most grounded.
