From functional forms to purely expressive works, Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics illustrates how contemporary Japanese artists have pushed the boundaries of what ceramics can be.

The exhibition features sculptural works that challenge the expectation that clay must serve a practical purpose—from the abstract forms of the avant-garde Sōdeisha movement to contemporary explorations of texture, scale, and material.

On view through May 30, 2027 at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona, California, Tōgei brings together 106 works tracing the evolution of contemporary Japanese ceramics from the 1940s to today.
