Join us April 29, at 5p Pacific, for the next edition of the Mapmakers Alumni Institute, organized and hosted by Njelle (Njara) Hamilton MFA ‘24, and featuring Dawn Walton and Marcia Douglas.

Register via our Linktree!

Njelle will lead a conversation about what prose writers might learn and borrow from music and musicians. What is the secret of using the written word to capture the sonorous and embodied experience of listening to, composing, and performing music? Dawnie Walton and Marcia Douglas read from novels inspired by and infused with rock, blues, and reggae, and share their tips for crafting immersive and realistic music scenes and fictional musicians. by @enjaywrites

The moment the cute heels come off after an amazing birthday weekend of poetry, music, and fellowship with old friends. Tangible mementos of precious memories:

🦋VIP digs from the @maxwell Serenade tour in Hampton Roads, VA at @hampton.coliseum featuring @jazminesullivan and @octobertheking (my new voice crush! #mulhollanddrive on repeat!)

🦋Signed vinyl of “My Stupid Life” by the incomparable @brittneyspencer (my gums what a voice, what a pen, what guitar skills, what a beauty, what a sweetheart!)

🦋Signed books by poets Lorna Goodison & Merle Collins … + the @furiousflowerpc program by @enjaywrites

🚨CONGRATS to @marybeth_ray and my fellow contributors on the publication of the @adolescentia_ project’s edited collection on music, identity & adolescence! 🎉🥳🎊

While they were celebrating the book launch in Philly on Aug 1, I was celebrating my essay (ch 7) on being a #jordanknight and @nkotb fan at the #magicsummertour in Virginia Beach. (And yes, I brought Jordan a copy of my essay 🫣🤣.)

Thanks to my newfound fellow #blockheads 🤖 Claudia & Sabrina & Dorothy & Chrissy for making my solo outing fun & memorable.

Special shout out to @donniewahlberg & @dannywoodofficial for being so sweet and accessible during the meet & greet & for taking the time to come chat & huddle with us magic-seaters backstage.

What a gift to watch my favorite guys up close (my second ever New Kids concert—first was in Boston in 2008!) You guys kept us singing and dancing for two hours straight (my cute sandals gave up the ghost after the show). Y’all brought the hits. Donnie and Danny brought the vibes. Jon brought the heart. Joe & Jordan served VOCALZ!

(But seriously: whose idea was it to have tens of thousands of pre/menopausal women gathering in amphitheaters in a 100+ degree weather!?!? Heatwave or hot flash, was the question. 😰😰)

#OTD 18 years ago … Aug 4, 2006 … I landed at #Boston Logan airport from London, fulfilling my teen dream to run away to America, live in Boston and become a singer and novelist (yes, inspired by #newkidsontheblock @nkotb videos 🫣🤫) … On that first “Coming to America” day (and many since), what pure thrill of walking those deeply imagined streets known by heart from the map that hung on my bedroom walls in Jamaica, France, and London. Boylston, Tremont, Newbury. Back Bay, Beacon Hill. Emerson College, where I was offered a place in the BFA and then the MFA but didn’t have the money to go. The theater district, setting of my first novel “Butterflies.” And newfound favorite haunts: Boston Harbor, Downtown Crossing (RIP Filene’s Basement and Borders!), Harvard Square, Revere Beach, and yummy Jamaican food and Jamerican thanksgiving feasts in Dorchester. taken in Boston, Massachusetts by @enjaywrites

Blow wow ... this lick me, lick me for six, man. Y'all wouldn't know. @mandisaofficial 💔 Sister in the faith, sister of the voice: your music was a "Lifeline." You taught me to realign my thinking to "The Truth About Me." I hope you knew how loved you were, how your words and voice and your courage to share your struggles gave so many of us a map to our own healing and freedom. Sleep well... by @enjaywrites

Had a lovely time chatting about fatherhood, at-will kinship in the face of shattered relationships, grief, black home- and landownership, exile/migration/return and much more with this amazing trio of novelists.

Donna Hemans (The House of Plain Truth—Jamaica 🇯🇲)

Joanne Skerrett (Island Man—Dominica 🇩🇲)

Jeffery Blount (Mr. Jimmy From Around the Way—US).

Thanks to the @vabookfest for making a space for black fiction and to the historic Jefferson School’s African American Heritage Center for hosting us.
