The three pillars behind my philosophy as an educator (and as a mom and as a business owner) is that reading makes us smarter, kinder, and better citizens of the world. Who's with me? ๐ŸŒŸ by @enliven.lit

Third reason to grow kids into readers is it makes them better global citizens. When we raise people who are both smarter and kinder they are more likely to take a stand and fight for change. #kidslit #growingreaders #reading by @enliven.lit

Lots of people under estimate the depth of kids lit! Even books designed for early readers like this Unicorn Diaries series by Rebecca Elliot (a big favourite in my house) can help start important conversations. Whether it is a simple/common (but still important!) topic like friendship or respect or a more nuanced commentary on something like disability or refugees, kids books can be great conversation starters.

Can you think of a book that prompted a great conversation with your own kiddo? I'd love to hear about it!

Second reason to grow readers is that reading books makes kids kinder by building empathy. Showing us different lived experiences and engaging deeply with them is a psychological experience that is difficult to replicate any other way. Do you agree? #kidslit #reading #growingreaders by @enliven.lit

When my kid asked me why I like to read so much, I doubt she expected the avalanche of reasons I gave to her!

I told her that I like reading because I find it fun. It's a bit like watching a movie but so much more magical because it involves my imagination too. I told her that I like to read books to escape into another world which can distract me from things in my life that might be stressful or hard. I also told her that I like to read to learn new things about different places, and people, and times. I said it helps me understand other people better because it helps me to see what it is like to live another kind of life. I said that reading helps me stay connected to what's going on in culture and world around me, forcing me to engage with new and interesting ideas. And that reading is something I can share with my friends and loved ones. Whether it's chatting with my book club besties about our buddy read, making recommendations to friends (or strangers on the internet!) or even my bedtime stories with her, reading is such an important part of my life and my relationships. It's a huge part of who I am.

Why do YOU love books so much? How would you explain it to a child?

There are three main reasons that kids should become readers. Here I talk about my first reason: it makes them SMARTER. Reading naturally develops fundamental critical thinking skills, and these skills are more important in today's world than ever before. #kidslit #reading #growingreaders by @enliven.lit

You know you've said it (or at least thought it): "I wish my kid would read less of X and more of Y." But that's the wrong way to look at it.

Sure, variety is good. Yeah, stretching our capabilities and broadening our horizons is great. But that's not all reading is about. The important thing is that your kid is reading. They're engaging with stories. They're building valuable habits. Those habits will change and fine tune over time.

Pushing your kid away from their graphic novels, or their audio books, or that same book they've been reading over and over for two years isn't going to push them towards whatever it is you have decided is more valuable. More likely it will just push them away from reading.

Encourage them to read the things that give them joy. You can ALSO gently nudge them towards other reading experiences, but remember that building a reader means giving them the power to choose what they want to read too.

I am a champion of people (especially kids) reading whatever the heck they want. So why am I harder on myself? When it comes to my own reading I can be a bit of a literature snob, or have an expectation that my reading should be "productive" -- but that's a) ridiculous, and b) contrary to what I actually believe! Is this anyone else???

I'm currently on Dungeon Crawler Crawler book 4, "The Gate of the Feral Gods" and having a GREAT time with it.

Have you ever felt guilty about a reading "guilty pleasure"?

Calling all 90's kids ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿ’ฟ

I wracked my brain to figure out what some of my favourite reads were when I was roughly ages 8-12 and these were what came up with.

I'm sure there were other good ones that I've totally forgotten! What were some of your faves?

Have you come back to any of these? Confession -- I recently re-read Flowers in the Attic and it was not nearly as exciting as I remembered it being ๐Ÿ˜…

What do you do when you stall on a book you're enjoying but really don't want to DNF? I have a couple books on the go but one just is slowing me right down. How do I get through it? Lemme know in the comments.#kidslit #reading #readingengagement by @enliven.lit

Fall is the perfect time to curl up with a good book. Maybe a nice cup of tea or apple cider to go with it ๐Ÿ˜Š

These all make great read-togther books, or would do well as independent reads.

What has cozy vibes that your middle grade reader has loved lately? Let me know what you would add to the list!
