Confidence isn't something you have to wait for the scoreboard to give you.

It can come from knowing what you bring to the game: attacking rebounds, applying defensive pressure, communicating, and taking the right shot when it’s there.

The score, the ref’s call and the momentum can all change.
But you can keep returning to the actions that help you impact the game.

What are the strengths and behaviours you can rely on, no matter what’s happening around you? by @enrichedathletes

It’s easy for athletes to let scoring become proof of whether they played well, especially when it’s the part everyone notices.
But there are so many other ways to impact a game, and often the most powerful shift is learning to value those things and put your energy into what you can control.

What are the parts of your game that deserve more value than you currently give them? by @enrichedathletes

Nerves don’t always mean something is wrong. Sometimes they’re simply part of doing something that matters.

The skill is learning how to acknowledge them without handing them control.

What are you waiting for from the game before you can settle?

A shot to go in? Some reassurance from the coach? A few mistake-free minutes?

I know I spent plenty of games across my own career believing one good play would change how I felt. Sometimes it did...but usually only until the next mistake.

You don’t have to feel calm or confident before you play the way you want to.
You can feel uncomfortable and still make the next decision, communicate, defend and act with intent.

Pressure can make athletes believe they need to feel confident before they act confidently. Often, the real skill is learning to feel the nerves, accept that mistakes will happen, and still take the next action anyway.

What changes in your performance when you stop trying not to lose and start playing to win? by @enrichedathletes

Often, we get caught waiting for the game to give us permission to settle.

Waiting for confidence before we play freely.
Waiting for proof before we trust ourselves.

It’s this waiting that ends up changing the way you play. Your attention becomes caught up in trying to feel better, and there’s less of it available for the game itself.

But you can feel uncertain and still make a decision.
You can feel frustrated and still communicate.
You can be disappointed with your last play and still commit to defending the next one.

Performance freedom doesn’t come from finally collecting enough evidence that everything is okay. It comes from learning that you can still act with intent when it isn’t.

I can think of plenty of games across my career where I believed one good play would help me settle.

If i could just make a shot, get a stop, hear something positive from the coach, THEN I’d feel calm and play freely again.

Sometimes it worked. But it never lasted long.

What I understand now is that I didn’t need to wait for the game to make me feel better before I could play the way I wanted to. I could feel uncomfortable and still make the next decision, communicate, defend and act with intent.

That’s what my latest article is about.

Pressure doesn’t only make us rush physically. It makes us rush to decide what a moment means.

I’ve caught myself doing this so many times. One mistake becomes evidence that I’m playing badly. One difficult moment starts to feel like the whole story.

Before long, we’re no longer responding to what’s actually happening. We’re reacting to everything we’ve decided it means.

When you catch yourself rushing to a conclusion, come back to what’s in front of you. Then take the next action.

What might change if you stopped treating one difficult moment like the whole story?

I explore this further in my latest article, *Why We Rush*. Read the full piece via the link in bio 🫶 by @enrichedathletes
