Dashanbao is such an underrated area for photography and is still pretty unknown to Western tourists.

Sadly, we weren’t there during the time when the black-necked cranes come down to spend the winter, which is one of the things Dashanbao is best known for.

The area is part of the Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve, a protected high-altitude landscape in northeastern Yunnan made up of wetlands, open grasslands and rolling hills more than 3,000 metres above sea level.

Walking through the endless green grass hills with sheep scattered across the landscape, there were moments where, if you didn’t know you were in China, you could almost think you were somewhere in New Zealand.

One of my favourite moments from the day was this shepherd sitting by the fire selling potatoes roasted over the open fire to tourists walking past. They were so good with chilli oil. In the next frame, he simply lies down in his swag and goes to sleep, which made the whole moment even better.

🦭 Kangaroo Island - Seal Bay 🦭

Some shots from our trip to KI 2025 with the whole family. Staying in Snelling Beach was so scenic.

Having both sides of the family visiting us at the same time was definitely special. It was also the first time my parents met my wife Qiuyu’s parents. Watching everyone communicate through translator apps, and us translating here and there, was pretty memorable. 😅

Dousha Ancient Town (豆沙古镇), 2024 — Walking through Dousha Ancient Town, a place slightly off the beaten track and still relatively unknown to Western tourists.

Dousha was rebuilt in the traditional style after an earthquake almost completely destroyed the historic town in 2006.

The town lies along the Five-Foot Road, part of the ancient Southern Silk Road, a cobblestone route dating back to the Qin dynasty more than 2,200 years ago that connected central China via Sichuan with Yunnan.

Guan River (关河), Dousha, 2024 — Five generations of transport meet within one narrow valley: the river waterway, Qin-era Five-Foot Road, national road, railway and modern expressway, forming the landscape locally known as “Five Roads Parallel” (五道并行).

A few more shots capturing everyday life in Dousha Ancient Town, which was rebuilt in a traditional style after an earthquake almost completely destroyed the historic town in 2006.

The cobblestone Five-Foot Road formed part of the ancient Southern Silk Road. Dating back to the Qin dynasty more than 2,200 years ago, it connected central China with Yunnan via Sichuan.
