@enterthehyperscientific, launched in Fall 2021, was a pioneering initiative that fostered transdisciplinary collaborations between Swiss and international artists and EPFL’s scientific community. Each year, selected artists took part in a three-month residency to develop visionary projects at the intersection of scientific research and artistic practice.

In close collaboration with EPFL laboratories, the resident artists explored a wide range of scientific fields—from AI and robotics to environmental science, computational geometry, exoplanetary research, material engineering, neurobiology and neuroscience, psychophysics, interspecies AI, and scientific imaging, among others. The residencies culminated in public exhibitions at EPFL Pavilions.

Initiated by EPFL’s College of Humanities (@epflcdh), amplified by EPFL Pavilions (@epflpavilions), and in partnership with the City of Lausanne (@villedelausanne), Enter the Hyper-Scientific established a dynamic platform for aesthetic inquiry across art, science, technology, and the humanities. The program was led and curated by Giulia Bini (@giulia__bini).

𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 ! 🌙✨
There is time until 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟵 to discover 𝙃𝘼𝙇𝙊𝙎 at @epflpavilions – Pavilion A!

Organised in conjunction with @mudaclausanne’s 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝟮, the exhibition presents 𝘈𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪 by 𝗦𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗷 𝗥𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹 (@sahejrahal) and 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 (𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘐) – 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 by 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 with Sakander Zirai (@suioni) and composer Studio Øraya (@soeren_siebel_bas_grossfeldt).

𝘈𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪 is an immersive installation combining sculpture, AI, and tactile interaction. Visitors encounter an abandoned temple inhabited by mechanical tentacles, whose movements are governed by algorithms. These semi-autonomous creatures respond to visitors’ touch via conductive plates, creating a haptic dialogue between human and machine.

𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 (𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘐) – 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 explores interspecies communication through sensory interfaces. Drawing from the cognitive world of bats, it challenges the boundaries between human, animal, and machine intelligence.Visitors are invited to rehearse unfamiliar modes of perception in an installation that combines an actual ambient neural data display with experimental sound and cinematic depictions of possible futures in scientific research.

💫 Many thanks to everyone who has already visited! For those who haven’t – there’s still time until Sunday!

We were delighted to welcome you all and celebrate the new works by 𝗦𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗷 𝗥𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹 (@sahejrahal) and 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 (@nvisible.studio), with Sakander Zirai (@suioni) and composer Studio Øraya (@soeren_siebel_bas_grossfeldt).

𝙃𝘼𝙇𝙊𝙎 immerses visitors in a world where artificial intelligence serves as a medium to rethink our bonds with the living and the non-human. The exhibition delves into non-verbal intelligences whose cognition unfolds through touch, movement, and atmospheres. Through machinic memory, sensory contact, and interspecies interfaces, 𝘏𝘈𝘓𝘖𝘚 creates spaces where the boundaries between human, animal, and technology dissolve, making room for new forms of shared perception and interconnected existence.

Probing the bond between touch and thought, Atithi invites visitors into a strange ritual of extra-human cognition among a contingent of AI-driven tentacles wandering the remains of an abandoned temple. Atithi is the Hindi word for visitor or guest, although more literally it suggests a being that occupies an uncertain temporality, ungoverned by deterministic origins or ends. In each of the work’s AI appendages, brain and body are enmeshed and indistinguishable from each other, collectively forming a quasi-sentient cluster of mind-limbs.

𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 follows scientists experimenting with neural tags designed to amplify interbrain synchrony — temporary alignments in neural activity across individuals. When bats escape into the desert, the resulting “open-field data” reveals a new emergent pattern: a collective cognitive state — State X. The installation invites visitors to explore unfamiliar modes of perception through neural data displays, experimental sound, and cinematic depictions of possible futures in scientific research.

In a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly applied to “decode” animal communication, 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 (𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘐) – 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 interrogates the dominant framing of interspecies understanding as a matter of verbal translation. The film investigates how ambient technologies—interfaces that communicate through continuous sensory representations—might open up alternative ways to conduct research on more-than-human minds. The narration follows a team of scientists trying to map the collective cognitive landscape of eight lab-born fruit bats. As the study unfolds, the scientists find themselves navigating an emergent cognitive field where agency is diffused, and distinctions between human, bat, and machine intelligence begin to dissolve.

#Focus on Sahej Rahal

In a world where artificial intelligence, powered by mega-corporations, threatens to reduce conscious experience to a mere mechanical process, Sahej Rahal (@sahejrahal) takes a stand by creating immersive, audio-reactive virtual worlds.
During his residency at @enterthehyperscientific, Sahej developed cybernetic playgrounds where human and extra-human intelligences engage in creative dialogue. These generative worlds, populated by AI, react to sound and touch, creating soundscapes that transcend the boundaries of the physical and virtual dimensions.

As part of his residency at @enterthehyperscientific, 𝗦𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗷 𝗥𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹 (@sahejrahal) exchanged with the 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗯 – 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆, a laboratory specializing in the study of cognitive processes related to memory. In 𝘈𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪, he transposes these concepts of biological memory into a hybrid environment, where artificial intelligence and touch become the primary modes of interaction.

Through this installation, Rahal explores the connection between memory, machine, and perception. Like human memory, the AI in 𝘈𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪 is built and shaped through interaction, giving rise to a new form of “shared memory” between human and machine.
