A few people have asked why I use the handle @enthusiasticunderachiever, and if it comes from anywhere.

When I was a kid I used to stay with my Uncle and Aunty some summers, and beside the bath tub my Uncle had a Tank Girl magazine and a copy of Ben is Dead - a Los Angeles based zine that focussed on slacker culture, punk rock, retro toys, cult films, alternative art etc.

This issue in particular had the tagline “the lifestyle mag for enthusiastic underachievers”.

As someone who was beginning to embrace counterculture and develop their own taste in art and music, I found it really exciting.

It felt like a kind of self-effacing humour for people who loved creating but weren’t particularly career-minded.

The phrase has always stuck with me, and although my life is a far cry from those who started the magazine in 1988, I’ve always identified strongly with that sentiment behind it. by @enthusiasticunderachiever

I finally got round to finishing three EPs last summer. I’d planned to release them over the course of 2026 so I’d be able to consistently share tracks while working on new ideas, but as the second EP approaches its release date I’ve realised that it just takes up more time than I want to spend. I don’t care about streaming services, I don’t care about social media, so I’ll be releasing all EPs together on May 12th to coincide with @subvertworld going live to the public.

All three will be available on @subvertworld, @bandcamp, and my @metalabel__ ; Underachievers Club. I’ll also release one track every fortnight on @SoundCloud, accompanied by an Instagram post. Nothing will be on any other platforms. I get next to no streaming income, I don’t check my stats, I don’t share links or playlists, and so there is literally no reason for me to bother with these awful companies or get distributors involved in sharing a few jams with friends.

Trying to find ways to cut my screen time down even more, whilst still being able to share things I enjoy making. This just makes a lot of sense and I should have done it years ago.

(doom prairie) (i) came out today. If you want to hear (ii) and (iii) early, you can subscribe to my Bandcamp and get access to both. I should hopefully have another two very different EPs wrapped up in the next few months, so plenty of jams coming.

Forgot I released another song last Friday. It’s a bit more chilled than the other two tracks, but similar vibe. My friend Joey set me a load of stems and I used them to build a song around a little beat I had and some vocal chops that don’t have a home at the time. The second track from (doom prairie) (i) is available on Friday 27th. This was the first song I started and the last song I finished. As such, it’s probably got the most ‘classic’ garage influence, with a few crazy sounds thrown in right before I called it a day. by @enthusiasticunderachiever

This is the second track from my debut EP, and it’ll be available in a fortnight.

It was the first song I started, and the last one I finished, so a few mates might remember this from a demo I shared at the end of 2022.

Can’t believe this project started almost four years ago. For me, the most enjoyable part of making music is getting lost in your process.

I joined @subvertworld in early 2025 when I was still considering releasing another pathfinder album as @infinite.arcade.

Essentially it’s a co-op; a collectively owned alternative to sites like Bandcamp, which left its community feeling pretty let down after back to back acquisitions in 2022 and 2023.

“Bandcamp’s trajectory illustrates a depressing reality of the contemporary internet: platforms position themselves as artist-friendly alternatives, only to seemingly abandon their core values and community.”

I decided to start releasing music under my own name and so joined again at the beginning of the year, receiving my wee welcome pack this weekend. It’s very cool.

I love the idea of Subvert. I want it to be successful and I want to be a part of it. Although I recognise their appeal and the whole ‘convenience is king’ argument, I don’t like the streaming sites, and I don’t like playing the social media game. I want to be a part of a small community and share music with people who care, like when I used to swap mp3 demos on forums, or even the early days of SoundCloud. I don’t want the process of releasing music to sour all the enjoyment that went into creating it.

Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy Bandcamp, SoundCloud and Instagram, but I don’t want to spend any more time on them than is necessary. I am, however, looking forward to spending time on @subvertworld.
