📢 It’s time for transparency and accountability.

3 weeks ago, we reached out to @sesame_collective about a deeply concerning issue: the cultural appropriation embedded in their branding and business practices. Initially labeling their menu as “Israeli” food, they overlooked and erased the true roots of these dishes, which belong to Palestinian/Levantine and North African cultures. 🌍

While they’ve since shifted their description to “flavors of the Levant,” this small adjustment doesn’t address the larger issue—profiting from cultures currently facing displacement, violence, and genocide.

As a business run by individuals who don’t belong to these cultures, we call on @sesame_collective to go beyond rebranding. We’re calling for an acknowledgment of the harm done and a commitment to real, actionable change that honors the origins of these foods and the people they represent. While @sesame_collective has yet to respond, we are open to a meaningful dialogue and work toward a solution that respects and uplifts the cultures they’ve built their success on. 🗣️

Until then, we encourage our community to boycott

A poem for Gaza

I never knew death until I saw the bombing of a refugee camp
Craters filled with disfigured ankles and splattered torsos
But no sign of a face, the only impression a fading scream
I never understood pain
Until a seven-year-old girl clutched my hand
Stared up at me with soft brown eyes, waiting for answers
But I didn't have any
I had muted breath and dry pens in my back pocket
That couldn't fill pages of understanding or resolution

In her other hand she held the key to her grandmother's house
But I couldn't unlock the cell that caged her older brothers
They said, we slingshot dreams so the other side will feel our father's presence
A craftsman
Built homes in areas where no one was building
And when he fell, he was silent
A .50 caliber bullet tore through his neck shredding his vocal cords
Too close to the wall His hammer must have been a weapon
He must have been a weapon
Encroaching on settlement hills and demographics

So his daughter studies mathematics
Seven explosions times eight bodies
Equals four Congressional resolutions
Seven Apache helicopters times eight Palestinian villages
Equals silence and a second Nakba
Our birthrate minus their birthrate
Equals one sea and 400 villages re-erected
One state plus two peoples...and she can't stop crying
Never knew revolution or the proper equation
Tears at the paper with her fingertips
Searching for answers
But only has teachers
Looks up to the sky and see stars of David demolishing squalor with hellfire missiles

She thinks back words and memories of his last hug before he turned and fell
Now she pumps dirty water from wells, while settlements divide and conquer
And her father's killer sits beachfront with European vernacular
She thinks back words, while they think backwards
Of obscene notions and indigenous confusion

This our land!, she said
She's seven years old
This our land!, she said
And she doesn't need a history book or a schoolroom teacher
She has these walls, this sky, her refugee camp
She doesn't know the proper equation
But she sees my dry pens
No longer waiting for my answers
Just holding her grandmother's key...searching for ink

On May 18th Portland came out to commemorate over 76 years of ongoing Nakba in the shadow of on ongoing genocide in Gaza and increased violence, repression, and imprisonment across all of historic Palestine. We stood firm in our support of the people in Gaza, holding firm the will for Palestinians to return to their lands from the river to the sea. It is important on this day to emphasize the power in our united organizing and the power of joint struggle on our path towards liberation.

Historically and today, the Arab diaspora has played a pivotal role in mobilizing our communities, wherever they are, to advance the struggle in Palestine. It is our duty to honor the legacy of Palestinians by fighting for total liberation. It is our role as allies to support because our struggles are intersectional — whether through ideological unity or shared impact, we all must fight for and protect each other. Just as our struggles are overlapping, so to is our liberation.

We are not free until we are all free. Our liberation is bound up with that of Palestine — we fight for a different future for all of us.

On Saturday we filled the streets to show our city, to show our ineffectual electeds, to show our complicit federal government, and to show the world that we are not going away, that we are not dying out, and that we will keep showing out in mass.

The US and the Zionist entity want us to think that we have no power here. Our elected officials, our government, are just hoping to wait us out. They’re hoping we will tire and give up because of the powers stacked against us but we will prove them wrong. Because we know, that power of a people united CAN enact change.
We owe Gaza endurance, not only in witness but in action. Not just because this genocide wouldn’t be happening without our tax dollars and the green light from our government. But because it is our moral imperative to fight for justice alongside those facing oppression.

The ongoing resistance to over 76 years of ongoing Nakba shows the power of the Palestinian people’s sumoud, the resilience and steadfast mindset that refuses to be beaten down into submission or accepting injustice. In the diaspora we must enact our sumoud by taking continued steadfast action.
We have all shown up today as allies, as Arabs, as Palestinians to stand together to say enough is enough. 76 years is 76 too long and we know that our collective resistance will lead us to eventual liberation. A liberated future where Palestine is free and so too are all our siblings in struggle. We know that in the same way oppressors are connected, all the imperial and colonial forces stem from the same rotten root, our liberation is also bound together, our liberation is bound with Palestine’s. So we stand here and we fight together. We will not stop resisting until Palestine is free.

Unraveling Symbols: The Red Triangle & Thawabet

The inverted red triangle has a specific context in its usage, particularly related to Palestinian symbolism. It first appeared in the al-Qassam Brigades videos during the counter-actions against the incursion on Palestinian lands, where it was used to mark Israeli military targets about to be attacked. This symbol has since been adopted in various forms of media and protests, representing support for Palestinian resistance.

The inverted red triangle, a symbol of Palestinian resistance, and the Thawabet, the foundational principles of the Palestinian cause, intertwine to represent steadfastness and resilience. Together, they underscore the enduring struggle for rights and self-determination. They embody the spirit of unity, resilience, and the pursuit of justice.

The Thawabet, or ‘constants’, are the bedrock of Palestinian national identity. Formulated by the Palestinian National Council of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) 1977, these principles include:

- The right to resistance,
- The right to self-determination (statehood),
- Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, and
- The right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and lands in what is today Israel

These non-negotiable rights are central to the Palestinian ethos, shaping culture, media, and daily life. They stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Palestinian people and their quest for justice and peace.

The Spoon: A Symbol of Resilience and Liberation

In the heart of struggle and resistance, a humble utensil emerges as a beacon of hope and liberation. The spoon, an everyday object, has transcended its ordinary use to become a powerful symbol of Palestinian resilience.

The story of the spoon began with a daring escape. Six Palestinian prisoners carved their path to freedom from the high-security Gilboa prison using spoons, plates, and even the handle of a kettle. Their incredible journey of liberation turned the spoon into an emblem of ingenuity against oppression.

Across Palestine and beyond, spoons are held high alongside flags and banners. They are not just tools but testaments to the indomitable spirit of those who seek justice. Artists and demonstrators alike brandish the spoon, a testament to the fact that even the smallest acts can challenge the mightiest walls.

From Gaza City murals to sculptures named “Spoon of Freedom,” this symbol serves as a reminder: with determination and courage, barriers can be overcome, and liberation can be attained.

Let’s honor the extraordinary courage of those who fight for their freedom with the most ordinary of tools.

WE ALREADY KNOW THIS
by Tariq Luthun

There is more to us than
What was taken from us.
A place to call
home. Land of olive trees,
and their branches.
Palestine. There.
I’ve said it. I want to be sure
that everyone knows
from where my parents
hail. Everyone needs a place
to call home. Genocide: everyone,
I would hope, knows that it did not start
and did not end with the
Holocaust. I haven’t forgotten that
everyone needs a place on this planet. And I,
I prefer to live where I can leave
the doors unlocked —
or live without the doors —
or hell. I don’t even care
for walls. But, I do care
for the blues: water; the sadness
that comes when it is not within
sight. I don’t know if there is
a child, anywhere on this earth, that wasn’t,
at least once, held by their mother. Again,
water: where my mother held me
until I was given to land. O firm land — how my father holds
me — folks keep calling for blood, to dress you in it.
I don’t think any of them
know, truly, how much of it
the body can take; how much of it
the body can lose. by @entifadapdx
