What is SLEEP DIVORCE? - Sleeping in a separate room from your partner to get a good/better nightโ€™s sleep. Itโ€™s not a legal divorce but rather a practical solution to reduce disturbances, such as snoring. Habitual snoring occurs more in males than females Factors that may worsen snoring; 1. Here are my favourite items to make travelling with our daughter smooth and easy. 1. Stroller - Also known as yoyo stroller - Easy to fold and carry as an overhead luggage 2. Baby carrier with a hip seat - It is easy to use and comfortable - Breathable We enjoyed our camel ride in the hot summer days of Cairo (45 degrees Celsius) Baby girl even took a nap. 3. Baby back pack carrier - Good for hiking, long walks, excursions - Baby can easily enjoy the walk while playing on dadaโ€™s back 4. And electric bottle steriliser and warmer - Plug & play! 5. Snoring is common โ€” but donโ€™t dismiss it as โ€œnormalโ€. ๐Ÿ˜ด โš ๏ธ Persistent, loud snoring can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. โค๏ธ Untreated sleep apnoea is linked to high blood pressure, stroke and an increased risk of heart failure. Look out for: โ€ข Gasping or choking during sleep โ€ข Witnessed pauses in breathing โ€ข Waking up unrefreshed โ€ข Excessive daytime sleepiness Not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea, but regular snoring deserves an assessment. What I see at work, in the consulting room and in theatre, influences how I parent. Here are a few things Iโ€™m particular about as an ENT surgeon and toddler/infant mom. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿพ EARS โ€ข No Q-tips in little ear canals. We clean the outside, we donโ€™t go digging. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿพ NOSE โ€ข A stuffy, sniffly nose? I reach for age-appropriate saline spray or drops. ๐Ÿ‡ FOOD & CHOKING โ€ข Yes, I still cut grapes and cherry tomatoes into quarters, lengthways. โ€ข Whole nuts and hard sweets stay off my toddlersโ€™ menu. โ€ข We sit down to eat, no running around with food in our mouths (itโ€™s quite a challenge at times) ๐ŸŽ€ FOREIGN BODIES โ€ข My home and car are coin-free zones. I donโ€™t want a single loose coin within little handsโ€™ reach. โ€ข When I undo my girlsโ€™ hair, every bead gets collected. โ€ข Beads and tiny toy parts can end up in ears, noses or airways , or be swallowed. โ€ข Button batteries stay out of reach, and battery compartments stay secure. ๐Ÿ˜ด SLEEP & BREATHING โ€ข Snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep or pauses in breathing get my attention, and deserve assessment. Planning rhinoplasty? Give your body the best chance to heal As an ENT surgeon, hereโ€™s what I advise: โ€ข Stop cigarettes, vaping, shisha and all nicotine products at least 4 weeks before surgery. โ€ข Stay smoke- and nicotine-free for at least 4 weeks afterwards, or longer if advised. โ€ข This supports blood flow, oxygen delivery and wound healing. โ€ข In my practice, we test for nicotine exposure 1 week before surgery. A positive result means postponing surgery to prioritise your safety. โ€ข Tell us about any nicotine patches or gum you use so we can guide you. These are minimum recovery periods. It feels so good to be back. ๐Ÿค After a couple of years where motherhood beautifully took centre stage, I finally got to reconnect with another part of myself that I truly love , learning, growing and continuously refining my craft as a surgeon. I had the privilege of attending the Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery & Basic Skull Base Course hosted by the University of Pretoria ENT Department, made even more special as we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of this incredible course. ๐ŸŽ‰ Medicine has a way of reminding you that you never really stop being a student. There is always more to learn, another skill to refine and another opportunity to become better for the patients who trust us with their care. And what a joy to do it alongside amazing colleagues who continue to teach, inspire and create spaces for us to grow. ๐Ÿ“š Motherhood may have borrowed me for a little whileโ€ฆ but the student, the surgeon and the love for learning never left. Transformation Journey: Septo-Rhinoplasty Meet this beautiful young lady in her late 20โ€™s, who has wanted to augment her nose since childhood. She had allergic rhinitis symptoms and difficulty breathing through both nostrils. Her nose exhibited several issues, including scarring over the nasal bridge due to scratching from allergic rhinitis, a dorsal hump, asymmetry, and a deviated caudal septum. The procedure involved endoscopic sinus surgery and primary septorhinoplasty which included: - Correction of the deviated nasal septum, - Columela strut, - Septal extension graft, - Reduction of dorsal hump, - Bilateral lateral and medial osteotomies.
