What’s Welcome Week and why should I go? 🎉

Welcome Week at Napier is organized by our Students’ Association and is focused around a bunch of different events where you can explore Edinburgh, meet new people, and find your way into your new life at Napier! 💕
⠀
I get that going to random events with a bunch of strangers can seem daunting but whether you’re a first year, returning, postgrad or international student, it genuinly is such a great way to make friends with people who are starting the same journey. 🎉
⠀
Personally, I made one of my closest friends at one of the Welcome Week events last year that I never would’ve met had we not both gone to the same one. ☺️
⠀
So if you’re on the fence I’d say check out this year’s program, see if there’s anything that tickles your fancy (the options are genuinly endless!!) and try out something new!

Moving to a new city is exciting, but it can also feel a little strange at first. 🌍

For me, Edinburgh slowly started feeling like home through the little things like finding places I loved, cooking food from home, meeting new people and creating my own routine.

If you’re new to a city, don’t put pressure on yourself to settle in straight away. Give yourself time, be curious, and let it happen naturally. 🤍

My number one tip for studying at Napier as an international student? 👀

Reach Out!! 🙏🏻
⠀
It sounds simple and it kind of is, but it’s so much easier to get help when you know who to ask. Luckily there’s a ton of student support for international students (like me!) at Napier that I personally haven’t experienced from any other university. 😇

So whether it’s questions about your visa, your application, language support or anything else I’d really recommend you just reach out to the international student support team. They’re all lovely people and they’ve been so so helpful during my time at Napier!

The countdown is on! Two weeks to go before the new academic year starts! ✨

This time last year I was excited and nervous as I was packing up to leave home. Some of you might feel the same right now. As the fear and anxiety creeps in, you might even doubt your decision. That is completely normal!

My advice: attend as many events as you can during the welcome week and talk to other international students, you will find you’re not alone in your worries 🫶🏼

Starting at ENU this September? This one’s for you! 💙

From one student to another, here are a few things I’d do during Welcome Week to make those first few days a little easier , check the schedule, try something new, meet people and, most importantly, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

You don’t need to know everyone or figure everything out straight away. Just take it one day at a time and enjoy your first week at ENU. 🫶

Finding community abroad? It’s closer than you’d think! 😊

Making friends and meeting new people is a huge part of studying abroad but sometimes it can feel difficult doing so outside of the program you’re in. My top tip for doing so anyway is to stick with what you care about! 🙏🏻

Trying new experiences is great but sometimes it’s easiest to find your people in the communities you’re already a part of! In my case, I’ve always been a huge reader so my first stop after coming to Scotland were some of the amazing indie bookstores in Edinburgh (and Glasgow and Stirling and more), pictured here.

Going to events and starting random conversations with other book lovers has been such a great way to make friends and connect in a city I didn’t know anyone in. So even if books might not be your thing, try and see if there are any clubs, events or groups for your passions, whether that be at uni or outside of it. 💕

Moving into a new place can be exciting, but it can also take a little while before it actually starts to feel like home 🏠🤍

A few little things that helped me make a new room feel more like my own are adding some photos or things from home, keeping my favourite little items around, creating a cosy corner, and having small routines that make the space feel familiar. ✨

And honestly, you don’t need to spend loads of money decorating! Sometimes it’s the little personal touches that make the biggest difference. 🫶🏻

If you’re moving to the UK for university, I hope your new room becomes a little place that feels like home, even when you’re far away from home. 🇬🇧🤍

A question I’ve heard again and again since coming to Scotland is: But how are you going to get around if you don’t drive? 👀

Well folks, I think it’s clear we have a lot of options! 😂
⠀
Whether it’s the bus, by bike, the tram, or by foot, Edinburgh itself is super easy to traverse without a car and if you’re going further afield there’s so many trains and busses and boats (highly recommend!!) to choose from you can get almost anywhere if you’re willing, even without a car! 🙏🏻
