October is a good month to get a few things in the ground before winter.

The RHS list for this month includes garlic, overwintering onion sets, broad beans in milder spots, spring cabbage (net it against pigeons), and green manure like field beans or grazing rye to cover bare soil.

What would you add?

Red bottle or blue bottle: it comes up every winter.

Propane (Calor's red bottles) still turns to gas in a hard frost; it boils at −42°C. Butane (blue) fits more gas in the same size bottle, 15kg against 13kg, but Calor only rates it for outdoor use down to −1°C.

Which do you use, and why?

An inverter left on with nothing plugged in still draws power.

Victron lists 20W for a MultiPlus 12/3000 at zero load. Over 24 hours that's 480Wh, about 40Ah from a 12V bank, for nothing. Search mode drops it to 8W, and switching off overnight drops it to zero.

Do you leave yours on overnight?

Myth or fact time: it's illegal to give your hens kitchen scraps.

I'll put the answer and the sources in the comments later today.

What's your call, and why?

A few of you made a fair point on my LED post: cheap LEDs can die early or give off a horrible cold light.

Here's what to look for: lumens, not watts. Around 2700K for a warm glow. A CRI of 80 or more so colours look right. And keep them cool, because heat kills them. In one test cited by the US Department of Energy, running an LED 11°C hotter cut its useful life by 57%.

What would you add?

Other groups, first line:
- Not all LED bulbs are equal, and plenty of you have the dead ones to prove it.
- Quick follow-up on LEDs, because the quality question kept coming up. by @enviroagent

Your hot water tank needs a jumper.

Adding an 80mm jacket to a tank with thin 25mm foam could save £45 a year in GB and £35 in NI, and the jacket costs about £30.

The swap: an 80mm cylinder jacket. It pays for itself within a year.

Save this before winter, and follow for more simple swaps.

Some dental floss is made with PFAS.

Silent Spring Institute tested 18 flosses and found fluorine, a marker of PFAS, in 6 of them. Slick, glide-style flosses are often made with PTFE.

The swap: PTFE-free floss made from silk or plant fibre. Check the label.

Single-use batteries end up in the bin.

450 million loose batteries were thrown away in the UK in a year, and batteries in bins caused over 1,200 fires in bin lorries and waste sites in 2023.

The swap: rechargeable batteries. Take old ones to a shop drop-off box instead of the bin.

Save this and clear out that drawer, then follow for more simple swaps.

Paper plates pile up after every party.

England used 721 million single-use plates a year before plastic ones were banned in 2023, and only 10% were recycled.

The swap: a set of 3 bamboo serving trays for every spread. Wipe them clean and use them for years.

Your compost bag could be ancient bog.

Peat forms at about 1mm a year, so a metre of bog takes around 1,000 years to build.

The swap: peat-free compost made from bark, wood fibre or coir. Check the bag says peat-free, not "reduced peat".

Save this for your next garden centre trip, and follow for more simple swaps.

💩Nasty but hear us out 😂...A baby needs 4,000+ nappy changes. In the UK, the vast majority of the 3 billion disposable nappies thrown away every year end up in incineration facilities or landfills. Because nappies are made of mixed materials -including plastics, elastics, and organic human waste - they cannot be put into standard household recycling bins.

The swap: cloth nappies. Wash, dry, use again, and pass them on to the next baby. Many councils offer cloth nappy trials or vouchers, so check yours.

Share this with a parent-to-be, and follow for more simple swaps.
