Days of memorable screenings and encounters in NYC.

One of the great joys of this visit has been reconnecting with my former classmate, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour. The episode of Shōgun he directed was one of my favorites. Seeing him now creating and directing in such a competitive industry fills me with tremendous pride. What a joy to meet again and see how far this classmate has come.

The presentation of The Uncle’s Request ended with an intense, profound, and memorable discussion. The film is now out of my control and, as always happens with cinema, each viewer begins making their own film. One question remained hanging in the air: Who will save us from this national debacle? No one had an answer.

Revenge or justice?

Yesterday, I also had a completely different and deeply moving experience: I went to see Buena Vista Social Club. I had been looking forward to seeing it with my German wife, and we finally did. The performance moved us to tears. She cried several times. The woman sitting next to her, a complete stranger, also cried several times. And I have to admit that I couldn’t hold back my tears a couple of times either.

When we left, we walked for several minutes without saying a word. I felt that my wife understood me, perhaps more deeply than ever before.

I have always believed that the culture of a nation survives fundamentally through three things: its food, its language, and its music.

In food, Cuba has lost much of its traditions. In language, we have witnessed profound distortion. But in traditional Cuban music, something essential of our identity still survives—something that has resisted decades of damage, impositions, and neglect.

And as long as there is someone who sings, plays, remembers, and passes that music on, Cuba will continue to exist.

Our episodes of THE TERROR: DEVIL IN SILVER are finally out (eps 3 & 4) on AMC+/Shudder ! (Out on AMC in Oct). And I’m SO proud of how this block turned out!

Thank you much Chris, Victor, Karyn and David Zucker for bringing me on this wonderful show.

This was an all star cast led by @thatdanstevens and I feel so honored to have had the chance to work with everyone of you all (esp getting to work with @judithlight again).

I’m very grateful to have a great AD team led by @tblockburger, a great DP in @srhcawley and her cam team, a fantastic editor in @ralphsedits to bring it all together as well as @olamaslik, Brooke, Robyn, Laura, Jennifer, and every other crew member. WELCOME TO DERRY was a show I worked over 2 years (yes TWO! I was on before the strikes and then after). I truly love the ALL of the cast and crew on this show and feel infinitely grateful to @andy_muschietti and @barbaramus for bringing me onto this project. And thank you @jasonfuchs and @bradcalebkane for trusting me with your script. This is by far one of the toughest shows I’ve worked on but with a family like this it was easier to get thru all the challenges. Thank you everyone for welcoming me onto set and for your patience as we quite literally went thru the trenches. I hope you all love the episode we put out into the world! Had a blast directing Apple TV’s BEFORE episodes 6 and 7. This was my first time shooting in NYC and I had such a great crew for this. Really loved collaborating with my DP @williamrexer and his entire camera team. It was an honor to work with @thebillycrystal, Jacoby and the rest of this super star studded cast. Rich Fox was the best editor I could have asked for. Sarah and @josephsousa82 your series was truly out of this world and you were such a joy to collab with on set. And Jet it was a dream to finally work alongside you. Thank you so much for putting me up for this and being such a support through out. FYC! Television Academy friends, voting is open for Emmy nominations until next week. Please consider SHOGUN Ep 8 “The Abyss of Life”. We’ve been submitted for OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES. It was the opportunity of a lifetime helming this one. It was a really pivotal episode for every single character in the series so there was a ton of pressure to get it right. Especially this scene in particular. This scene was one of the hardest scenes I’ve ever worked on and as a director you’re only good as the team that surrounds you. The writers, the actors, my ADs, the dept heads, my DP @marcle1, my editor @aikaooo, and our composers really helped us do the impossible here. And to this day, every time I watch this episode I get emotional. I hope this episode left an impact on you as well.

Getting to work on the final season Star Trek Discovery was incredible. First off I have to thank my friend @olatundeo for bringing me on this show. You’ve helmed one of the most ambitious shows on television. Thank you very much for trusting me to deliver 508. Thank you @thisisspiffy for always fighting for opportunities for me. I have and will always value your mentorship. @michelleparadise1 you were one of the kindest, smartest, most collaborative showrunners I’ve worked with. Thanks to the entire @secrethideoutco team for welcoming me into the fam! My DP @christophermably you made the impossible possible. You pushed for the ambitious and helped us elevate so many of our sets. Lauren and @ericjamesrobbins thank you for blessing me with such a deep introspective episode. @therealsonequa you are the heart of this show. But also the heart of this crew. Your optimism and kindness was infectious. And your performances nuanced, vulnerable and honest. I loved working with you. My brother @davidajala. It was great getting to know you. I loved the assuredness and commitment you had to Book. You bring so much humility, passion and inner life to Book so I was def looking forward to working with you. This entire bridge crew you guys welcomed me as a regular. Such a fun team! Thank you Tim Brinker for your patience and insight as we dug for the best edit choices for this episode. And last but not least, all the dept heads and this entire crew truly impressed me with how locked in and relentless they were. This never felt like TV show. You guys make cinema. Now that Shogun Ep 8 is out I thought I’d share some pics. There are SPOILERS in some of the later pics so please don’t swipe if you haven’t caught up yet. Thanks SO much for all the love guys. It’s been great to hear that the episode resonated so much with everyone.
It goes without saying, it wasn’t just me but a team effort. But for this show in particular that’s very very true. First person I need to thank is one of the best ADs out there hands down @dan0miller for connecting me to the producing team. Without you I probably wouldn’t have known about this. Also without an AD team like yours, a show of this scale would have been hell. Justin, Rachel, Ed, @eriko_miyagawa_ and @caillinpuente thank you for bringing me onboard and trusting me to bring this tragic episode to life. By far the best episodic experience I’ve ever had. @hiroyukisanadapr @tokuma_nishioka @cosmo.jarvis @annasawai @shinnosuke.abe @tadanobu_asano and the rest of the cast… it was a true honor to work with ALL of you…I had to pinch myself at times during rehearsals. So many of you are legends to me. @thecarlosrosario your costumes were spectacular. Helen and @michaelcliett it was really great collaborating to build early Edo! @marcle1 you were invaluable and incredible to work with. Thanks for your humility and for always pushing for a strong visual POV. And last but not least, thank you @aikaooo for your patience and dedication on this edit. We went thru the trenches on this… from a 90 min initial cut to a 55 min final. Thank you thank you! My last Ep. is now streaming. Eternally grateful to @jvantulleken for believing in me and bringing me on board; to showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo for creating such an incredible show. To my fellow collaborators @edjibevel, @arilwretblad and @boardboy535; thank you all for your lofty aspirations and beautiful images. Huge thanks to @edmcdon and Erin Smith for producing the shit out of it, @pah-cod for managing this monster. @thecarlosrosario @hvjarvis9 both of you ground us in this wonderful world to play in, thank you.
This crew was easily one of the best I have ever had the pleasure to shoot with; @dan0miller, @finnkingfinn, @david_tickell, John Clothier, @stevekrasznai, Jarrod Tiffin, David McIntosh, Rob Devitt, Amie Gibbins, Masayo Takada and all the crew who crafted such a special show.
