Open Letter to Members of the Nollywood Industry

I write this with deep pain, heavy heart and bitter disappointment, as a concerned observer and lover of nollywood.

It is my honest view that Nollywood has become one of the most insensitive and unaccountable industries anywhere in the world. They watch in shame as their colleagues, our veterans, our supposed legends pass away one after another — many reduced to begging publicly for funds to treat illnesses, pay rent, or even put food on the table. These are men and women who built this industry with their talent, sweat and sacrifice, yet when they need support most, they are abandoned.

It is a disgrace that we celebrate these same people with awards and applause while they are active, but turn our backs when they grow old or fall ill. It is shameful that we have big budgets for productions, lavish premieres and celebrity lifestyles, yet fail to create a simple, sustainable system to care for our own. Every death that could have been prevented is a stain on the conscience of every member of this industry — leaders, practitioners, associations and all those who have the power to make a change.

They cannot keep hiding behind excuses. We cannot keep treating charity as a substitute for justice and proper welfare. It is time to stop the shame, come together, and build a structure that protects every person who has given their life to make Nollywood what it is today.

Signed,
Ethrice Ekpen.

Be very careful out there... my blood... my blood... they want what you working hard and sacrificing for why they are not willing to sacrifice or work. Its better to live a boring life than to be around fake people that don't love you and want you dead.
