Episode one of Eons: Life and Death on Pangea is out now!!

In the Late Carboniferous Period, predatory amphibians and giant arthropods ruled the swamps of what’s now Nova Scotia. But among the plants and vertebrates of this time, a revolution was underway: new groups had arisen that could break their ties to the water entirely. These were seed plants and amniotes, and their adaptations to drier climates would give them a leg up in the Permian to come as the supercontinent of Pangea formed, the Carboniferous rainforests collapsed, and the land became more arid. And this wasn’t the only evolutionary revolution taking place: the amniotes were already splitting into the two groups that would become reptiles and the ancestors of mammals.

Check it out now on the free PBS app and PBS.org/eons (link in bio)!

EONS: LIFE AND DEATH ON PANGEA is a sweeping, immersive miniseries premiering July 29 that explores the “Great Dying,” the most catastrophic mass extinction in our planet’s history, when more than 80 percent of Earth’s species vanished.

Follow the Eons team as we step beyond the studio and go to places where the Permian Period can still be witnessed up close. We'll take you back to a world shaped by the supercontinent Pangea, extreme climate shifts, and ecosystems unlike anything seen today. From mega-monsoons and vast deserts to giant terrestrial animals, bizarre marine life, and massive volcanic eruptions, this series traces how Earth reached the brink of ecological collapse, and how life ultimately recovered. by @eonsshow

Going caving this weekend reminded me that I never shared BTS photos from Episode 5 of @eonsshow Life and Death on Pangea! 🎬 In this episode, we were trying to convey the devastation of life on planet earth in the wake of The Great Dying… It may not be the most famous mass extinction (that asteroid gets a lot of press ☄️ ) but it’s undoubtedly the biggest mass extinction, and it was in part triggered by MASSIVE amounts of basaltic lava oozing out from cracks in the ground of what is today Siberia (covering up to 3 million miles 🌋). However, it’s really the volatiles released with the lava (carbon dioxide! methane!) that led to extinction beyond the landscape of lava (which, when cooled, might have looked like the landscape here at @cratersofthemoon_nps). Excess CO2 in the atmosphere caused worldwide surface temperatures to rise to over 100F and excess CO2 in the oceans led to acidification on top of the oxygen depletion caused by warming ocean temperatures. In the end, over 70% of land species were wiped out, and up to 90% of ocean species. How, after all this, did life - uh - find a way? Well, you’ll have to tune in to find out. All six episodes of Life and Death on Pangea are streaming now on the @pbs website and the @pbs app!

Why did we do a whole broadcast series about the Permian? Well, because in a lot of ways the Permian is where the human story started.

Say hello to the main characters of the Permian: Lystrosaurus and gorgonopsians. When working on Life and Death on Pangea, gorgonopsids were a team favorite. We had a lot of fun playing with light in their portrayals and emphasizing the environment around them as well as the gorgonopsids themselves. Lystrosaurus is the star of episode 6, and we got to portray the genus in many different ways!

Of course, all of these reconstructions were done by paleo artists Franz Anthony (@franzanth), Julio Lacerda (@lacerda.julio) and Aldrich "Kia" Hezekiah (@Kiabugboy) who worked together to research, sketch, and render the key species of the series in full scenes that bring to life an ancient world.

The full series is available now to watch for free on the PBS app or at pbs.com/eons.
