TL;DR - Marcelo, Eosin Panther, and Mira are the best My life peaked in December 2019, when I received my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt at 46 years old from my instructor and close friend, Marcelo Garcia. By then, I had already graduated from two Ivy League schools, spent 20+ years managing at Verizon & Walmart, and launched two small businesses — but nothing compared to the GOAT tying that black belt around my waist. It represented nearly 20 years of training, commitment, and perseverance — and for the past decade, every trip I took was to NYC just to train under him. When I started training in 2000, I was fascinated by the different styles and brands of gis — and that interest eventually extended to belts too. Back then, people would happily pay $200+ for a gi but balk at paying for a premium belt. It never made sense — you wear your belt more than any single gi, and it directly represents our dedication to this crazy martial art we love. I searched for years to find the perfect belt — buying from companies in Japan, China, and the USA. When I still couldn’t find what I was looking for, I even tried creating my own, but no factory or gi company could meet my high standards. Finally, I found Eosin Panther @eosinpanther, a small company in Kennesaw, GA, quietly making premium custom belts since 1974 — all proudly made in the USA. After weeks of waiting (and amazing customer service from their owner, Mira), I got my first belt. The craftsmanship, stitching, fabric, and quality were exactly what I’d been looking for – it was the perfect belt! Many friends, students, and even world champions ordered their own after seeing and touching mine. Last year, I taught a seminar in Taiwan and gifted my worn black belt to my father, who proudly displays it on his bookshelf. I was so happy to share my greatest achievement with my greatest supporter! When I mentioned this to Mira in passing last week, she immediately sent me another custom belt to replace the one I had given my dad. And today it arrived — black on black embroidery with Marcelo’s logo and auto. Look at this beauty! My prize possession! (The dog is high up on the list too – but the black belt took me 19 years 😂) Whenever someone asks me what my favorite belt brand is (which happens pretty frequently as an academy owner), I unequivocally answer @eosinpanther ! It's not all about guns. There are so many ways to level up in life for yourself. Jiu jitsu and getting into mixed martial arts in general was one the absolute best things that I could have ever done for myself mentally and physically 23 years ish ago. Now, as an instructor who has helped open many schools and now celebrating 7 years of co-owning a school with my wonderful wife. Receiving my second stripe on my black belt from such an accredited instructor as @thejeremyarel, with a heritage like Professor @gordobjj makes me so proud I have dedicated so much of my life to this skillset. My life is more about martial arts instruction than anything else, and I only seek to continue my education to continue to pass that knowledge on to others. Im thankful for those who brought me to this world, and sadly, some are no longer with us. Im thankful for those that have been my instructors and mentors ( @brandonquick_agf , @novauniaoatl , tim hart ) to just name a few. Im thankful to be still here, still teaching and still training to the best of my abilities. 3 more years until my next stripe, and rest assured, I'll be a completely different person on the mats by then. I hope for those who take the time to read this that it affects you in a positive way and possibly drives you two wanting to learn martial arts and getting involved in some way. It will change your life positively forever. Huge thank you to my friends and family. To our community and members.
