It’s understandable that people travel to the other side of the planet for this. It’s hypnotizing even for locals 🤩 taken in Skjervøy by @epicnaess

This location has been on my list for years..

The first attempt I carried the drone half way up and left the controller on the kitchen table 🤦‍♂️

This was the second.

Full film coming to YouTube.

We might not be many people that live here, but there always seems to be a light in the distance 🇳🇴 taken in Troms by @epicnaess

Most people come to Lofoten for the aurora. The light that stays with me is often this kind: low sun, moving water, snow still holding on in the mountains.
On Arctic Colors we start the week in Reine and work the light from morning to night, not just after dark. Composition, long exposures, reading the weather, and time with @sapnareddy to turn the files into something.

Hamnøy, on one of the nights it all came together.

Yesterday I announced Arctic Colors, a winter photography workshop in Lofoten with @sapnareddy . This spot is part of day two. We’ll work Hamnøy, Sakrisøy and Reine from first light to blue hour, and if the sky opens, we stay out.

I can’t promise you a night like this. I can promise you’ll be standing in the right place if it happens.

This is Lofoten on a good night in March.
Not every night looks like this. Some are blizzards, some are rain, some are nothing at all. The nights like this one come after a lot of standing in the cold and knowing when to move.

Next March I’m bringing ten photographers out here for a week, together with @sapnareddy . We’ll chase the light from Reine to Henningsvær and sit down with the files while the conditions are still fresh.

Even on mornings like this, someone has to go get the fish for that burger you’ll rave about at Instagram 🌄 taken in Lofoten Islands by @epicnaess

Nobody should live here. It’s dark half the year. And it’s colder for longer than that. This year we had ten days of summer. Ten days where the temperature was above twenty degrees. And still someone said, yeah, but maybe we’ll get a nice autumn. This is the stubborn, optimistic life of people in Northern Norway. taken in Nordreisa by @epicnaess

One of my first aurora photos. Nordreisa, 2012.

Back then you could stand out there for hours and not see another tripod.
Now the even locals will stop their car at the first rest stop to capture it with their phones. That’s a good thing. More people get to see it.

But it changes the question. The aurora itself isn’t rare anymore, not in pictures. What’s rare is the place, the timing, the patience to wait for something the sky only gives you once. And sometimes just luck. I’ve never pretended otherwise.

This one was mostly luck. I kept it anyway, because it holds meaning to me. taken in Nordreisa by @epicnaess
