ALL COWS EAT GRASS // I started taking piano lessons two years ago. There has always been something in me that responds to piano music. I took lessons when I was little. I went to a lady’s house in South Carolina and played with the sun on my back. Afterwards she let me pick a candy, and I often chose Sixlets. In high school, after guitar was sort of a failed effort, I took lessons again at the music center, learning Celine Dion songs. At Warren Wilson, I had extra credits so I took a music course, which was essentially Warren G. giving me piano lessons. I enjoyed having a reason to be in the music building, and after hours, coming back out into the night and looking up and seeing the stars. I enjoyed the focus and attention practice demanded. You got better when you showed up. And it was a nice break from writing, a different creative pursuit. And so two years ago I decided to try again. To stay consistent. My sight reading is improving. My rhythm is still a work in progress. But the music I have learned to play has caught me and saved me and healed me and inspired me. Especially these past two months. I originally took some of these videos so I could “hear” the songs during my week, if I were driving or walking (since they often get stuck in my head), but it’s beautiful looking back and seeing my haircuts change and the trees outside the window stay in their seasons and my many outfits, proof of the days, of the years. Progress builds upon itself. Effort, failure, messing up, mistakes, and finally getting it right yield into the most beautiful sense of satisfaction. You just have to stop sometimes and look back and see how far you’ve come. ❤️ #piano by @epnz09

Publication day! Thank you @goodlifelitmag for picking up this essay, “rocket girl,” for your Micro Monday series. I’m so happy this one found its home with you all. Such great memories building these rockets on the pool table in Kourtney’s basement while everyone was watching movies. And then setting them off in the parking lot down by the track. Shout-out to all my high school friends who encouraged me to be myself; what a gift. 💫 by @epnz09

Mika (rhymes with "Topeka") has joined our crew. A wonderful new chapter began last Saturday. And Butter has been so welcoming. We are now a family of four, and Gabriel is outnumbered by all the girls. 🎀 by @epnz09
hugging you, on film 💔 still missing you Kourtney; we all agree there are so many times we've wanted to text you...about our animals and what we should do, about the music we've been rediscovering, all these photos, all these memories, this essay I have coming out called "rocket girl" which is all about me building those model rockets in your basement on your pool table in high school while you all watch movies on your big gray TV ("Don't get any glue on the felt, my dad would kill me," you tell me over your shoulder), driving around in Jamie's marshmallow white van and dancing on the roof, I've read our every email, our every Facebook message, your name and our fun is all over the pages of my journals, entries I'm saving for later; may your friendship continue to be a blessing, I think I'm feeling ways that it is by @epnz09
