I am happy and grateful to announce that I passed the NFL Agent Certification Exam!!! I would like to dedicate this new chapter to my grandfather Clinton R. “Bob” Moorman Jr.

One thing I heard my entire life from my grandfather is “you wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for football.”

Football was my grandfather’s life, he played in high school, he played for Hampton University (previously Hampton Institute) he played in the military while he served his country as a paratrooper in multiple wars earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart (and met his wife in Japan in the process). After he retired he coached football at Wylie College, was a scout for the San Diego Chargers, and then served as the first full time commissioner of the CIAA. I also just learned last night that he is the namesake of the @ciaasports football championship trophy. I know my grandpa pushed me through to make this happen in spirit and is watching over me proudly!! I love you grandpa and dedicate this to you!! 🙏🏽♥️✨🕊️ by @eppsfirm

The two copyrights in your song! Essential you register and protect both!! If you clear a sample you must also clear both copyrights. You have multiple assets in one song with two distinct income streams. There are more detailed nuances but this is a quick overview. As an independent artist you own both. Whatever contract you sign make sure you know if you are signing away either of these copyrights. The traditional record deal would have you sign away your master recording copyrights so we move towards distribution deals to retain our ownership rights. The traditional publishing deal would have you sign away your publishing (co-pub half) so we move towards publishing administration deals. Pay close attention to Work for Hire language in a contract (more on that soon). Also you can ONLY assign your contract in writing with your signature. “Friendly” reminder to all those who throw this in our face. I am fed up with people telling me that their unfair action to my client is ok because it’s “industry standard”. Fuck that! This industry was built by crooks for crooks to make more money off of artists creations. So just FYI you can save that terminology in our negotiations because it means NOTHING to me. And also stop putting artists again DT producers y’all are partners in creativity let’s look at this differently!! It’s past time to change the paradigm. Neighboring Rights income are an important stream of income that is not received in the United States. In this country performance rights are only paid on the composition (except for digital audio transmissions paid to the master owner and performer by SoundExchange). But in other countries these payments happen so you need to ensure you are collecting these monies. by @eppsfirm

Congratulations to Anita Baker for getting her master ownership back. She deserved them under Section 203 the copyright law provision calling for termination of transfers after 35 years. However the rules to obtain them are unnecessarily complicated and if you miss a deadline all can be lost. Also record companies got hip to the exception of work for hires and that’s why you see that language in every modern contract. My heart is warmed every time I hear of an artist getting back ownership of their assets!!
