Equality Illinois continues to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring all the wonderful contributions made to the LGBTQ+ movement by our Latine Leaders. Today we spotlight Dr. Norma Seledon, our Director of Leadership Development and Capacity Building.

“My unique blend of identities—as a queer, Mexican immigrant woman—and the experiences that come with living at those intersections have profoundly shaped how I understand leadership, power, resilience, and belonging. They have taught me that our communities already hold tremendous wisdom and capacity; our work is to recognize it, nurture it, resource it, and create pathways for it to lead.

I do this work because I want LGBTQ+ people—especially those whose voices have historically been pushed to the margins—to see themselves as leaders, decision-makers, and powerful agents of change. I also want those who hold resources and influence to understand the urgency of investing in our communities.

Honored to have @equalityill’s endorsement. This one means a lot as an organization I’ve loved being involved with for years. Earlier this week, Equality Illinois, @lacasanorte @irrppuic @illcfoundation and @almachicago1989 brought together community leaders to discuss the findings of the Latine Homelessness in Illinois: Structural Drivers of Inequality report and the disproportionate impact of homelessness on Latine LGBTQ+ youth.

The data in this report is critical. When combined with the lived experiences of our communities and national policy trends showing similar disparities among LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness across the country, it provides important insight into the structural barriers that continue to impact our communities.

Illinois State @senatoraquino and Illinois State @rep.lilianjimenez joined us to share what is happening at the state level and to discuss the work that lies ahead. Their partnership and commitment are essential as we continue advocating for policies that address the root causes of homelessness and advance equity for Latine and LGBTQ+ communities.

Thank you to all the community leaders, advocates, and partners who continue to show up, speak out, and work toward a more just and equitable Illinois.

Our communities deserve to be seen, heard, and supported. Our advocacy continues.
