"Until ..." a new poem by Michael Tyler, EJS Poet-in-Residence ~

We will never breath the rarest air
From the peaks of highest virtue,
Nor gaze into the starriest night
At the glow of brightest dreams;
Nor look up at the bluest skies
And the heavenliest intentions,
To see the sun arise to shine
A most amazing grace…

We will never sail the broadest seas
To chart the greatest truths,
Nor drink the purest water
From crystal lakes of pristine pride;
Nor fish from the longest rivers
That teem with life in full abundance,
Nor stand in the softest rain
To cleanse the harshest of our sins…

We will never rake and clear our fields
Of foul and evil deeds,
Nor uproot every weed
From our poison-ivy past;
Nor hose away the blood
From the slaughter of our wars
Then plow away the deaths
That count the tally of our hate…

We will never end the barren spread
That maps famine in our fairness,
Nor end the drought of greed
That makes a dust bowl of our hopes;
Nor germinate the sprouts
To replant every stolen freedom,
Nor pick the ripest joy
From our most inclusive vines…

Until each and every women
Receives the acreage of her worth,
The lot of her humanity
With full possession of her claim;
Until each and every woman
Has the title to her being
And the deed to her distinction
With no fetters and no fears.

From the author: I was once told by my Arkansan, paternal grandfather, when I was six-years old, “You ain’t no kinda man ‘less you got some kinda land; a place to stand on and look to the Lord and say, this be mine.” I grew up thinking that the same must hold true for women. This is one of the main reasons why agricultural, geographical, and geological references and metaphors are common in my poems. And given that men believe they have a proprietary claim of ownership for the “land” that is the body of every woman, I wrote this poem with that analogy. Until was created in solidarity with Jane Does everywhere, from Ithaca to Israel and from New York to New Zealand. It contains 40 lines, a data point parallel to a statistic that, on average, there are 40 cases of sexual assault reported at Cornell University, every year. by @equaljusticesociety

Governor Newsom signed AB 2599, the Truth In Disclosure Act, into law.

California's largest corporations will now have to formally disclose their ties to chattel slavery. This is accountability in action.

Thank you to Assemblymember Issac Bryan @ib2_real and our dedicated and driven coalition members who helped make this a reality.

Reparations are not a distant idea, they are happening NOW!

AB 2599 was just the first step, stay tuned. 👀 by @equaljusticesociety

44 organizations. One demand.

Submit a letter today urging @cagovernor to sign AB 2599. Link in bio.

AB 2599 has passed the Legislature with broad, diverse support, because Californians agree that the public has a right to know which corporations profited from slavery.

The Equal Justice Society honors Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15, and the contributions and achievements of Latinos, Latinas, Latines, and Hispanic Americans and immigrants in this country. We especially celebrate our staff, board members, and advisory board members who are of Latina/o/e or Hispanic descent.

Latino and Hispanic Americans and immigrants are cherished and vital to our nation yet face systemic and widespread oppression by the authoritarian Trump/MAGA regime.

The tragic reality is highlighted by a recent opinion piece by journalist Julio Túpac Cabello, published on palabra, the digital news site of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Visit equaljusticesociety.org or https://equaljusticesociety.org/2026/09/15/hispanic-heritage-month for a link to Cabello's opinion piece.

Do you believe your voice can actually be heard?

Or is it easier to think: nah, it won’t make a difference.

That’s exactly the story they want you to believe. That your voice doesn’t count.

But when you sign the petition telling the governor to sign the Truth in Disclosure Act, real talk, that’s not just your name on a letter. That’s you now. One of the ones who made California tell the truth first. One of the ones who turned proof into pressure. That’s who you get to be.

Add your name. Tell Governor Newsom: sign the Truth in Disclosure Act (AB 2599) → bit.ly/AB2599TD by @equaljusticesociety

Lisa Holder is a Black mother and civil rights attorney. She lost her firstborn to a preventable disease: American racism.

Her grief is intimate and profound. The conditions that produced it are systemic and preventable.

Black women, regardless of education or income, are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth than non-Black women nationally.

Grounding her analysis in maternal-health data, civil-rights law, and findings from the California Reparations Task Force, on which she served, Holder traces how this health crisis is sustained by political erasure.

This year, the Supreme Court sharply narrowed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making racial-discrimination claims harder to prove. When Black communities lose power at the ballot box, they also lose power over policies governing their care—including doula programs, protocols that limit discretion in medical decisions, and training designed to reduce stereotype bias.

This America 250 season, Holder draws a direct line from the birthing chamber to the ballot box.

The right to survive childbirth and the political power to change the conditions governing that care are not separate struggles. Both depend on whether Black lives and Black voices are treated as equal.

This the new poem titled ‘And…’ by Michael Tyler.

"I awakened on Tuesday to the disturbing news of yet two more lynchings. For months now, these stories, woefully unreported and shamefully dismissed, have plagued my conscience. While growing up, I was told by relatives, who lived through America’s lynching spree during the early to mid-20th century, about eyewitness accounts of bodies hanging from trees, barns, phone poles, and even church steeples. I learned about two relatives who met that end. So, these deaths impact me at a very visceral level. I’ve finally been able to steady my mind enough to write a piece about it. I’ve constructed a poem, woven and threaded by a series of ellipses, to suggest the weaving and threading that makes rope. In fact, the entire poem details the creation of rope from plant to end product. I use language to relate that creation to slavery and the coercive brutality of racism. It is not an easy read. It shouldn’t be." by @equaljusticesociety

The Truth In Disclosure Act (AB 2599) just passed the Senate floor. 🎉

A huge thank you to Assemblymember Issac Bryan @ib2_real for authoring this bill and carrying it every step of the way.

From the Assembly to committee hearings to today: this is what happens when a coalition mobilizes and refuses to let up.

Thank you to everyone who showed up: at Advocacy Days, in the hallways of the Capitol, behind the scenes, and everywhere in between. You made this happen.

One step left. One signature stands between AB 2599 and becoming law.

We’re not slowing down now. @cagovernor the nation is watching.

Stay tuned for more info on how you can urge Governor Newsom to sign AB 2599 into law.
