SB 1149 (@senatormed) Bereavement Leave for Chosen or Extended Family was signed by @CAgovernor! This bill updated California's existing bereavement leave law that allowed workers to take 5 unpaid days off to grieve.

We are excited for this law to go into effect January 1, 2027!

🌟 A brighter future for California’s children starts with reimagining CalWORKs to empower families rather than punish them!

⚖️ AB 1755 has been signed into law, ending the outdated CalWORKs 100-hour work rule that punishes families for working. #StrongerCA

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 The new law will help make sure two-parent families can access essential supports like food, #childcare, and housing help without fear of being denied eligibility because they exceeded the work-hour rule. 𝐈𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧.

Students in King George County, Virginia, shouldn’t have had to go to federal court to form a GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance). The district initially approved the club, then reversed course after conservative community backlash. In doing so, district officials violated the protections of the federal Equal Access Act, which requires schools that allow student clubs to provide equal access regardless of viewpoint. The district has since reversed its policy following a lawsuit by the students’ families. Equal access should not depend on whether a vocal segment of the community approves.

When SSAIS created @sashclubs, Students Against Sexual Harassment, we knew that some schools would find reasons to disallow the club. So SASH Club’s “Get Help Here” webpage links to The National Youth Rights Association @youthrights. They state:

All students attending a secondary public school are covered by the Equal Access Act (1984). This law makes it illegal for any school that has at least one “non-curricular” club to discriminate on the basis of “religious, political, philosophical, or other content of the speech at such meetings.” This rule applies as long as the club is voluntary, student-initiated, and doesn’t “interfere with the orderly conduct of educational activities.” This means that not only does the school have to allow the club but also has to provide the same resources it provides to other clubs. https://www.youthrights.org/issues/student-rights/student-clubs/

Do you need to take time off work to grieve the death of an immediate family member? California’s Bereavement Leave law allows workers to have five days of unpaid job protected leave to grieve.This law currently excludes the death of chosen or extended family members, but SB 1149 would fix this.
