Want to train your eye for distances? Start with one pole. 🐴

Here’s a drill that builds your eye from the ground up: as you canter toward the pole, the moment you feel the horse about to take off, say “1.”
Once that feels natural, add a stride — “2, 1.”
Then keep building: “3, 2, 1,” until you can count down from 4 or 5 strides out and land right on the takeoff.

Why it works: you’re teaching yourself to judge the approach naturally instead of guessing.
Once you can count down from 4 or 5 every time, walking into a jump with accuracy and confidence gets so much easier.

One pole. Big difference.

Struggling to see your distance?
Try counting to two. 🐴

Here’s a trick that quietly fixes a lot of messy approaches: as you canter toward the jump, count “1, 2” on every stride. The goal is to tell yourself early which stride you’ll take off on — the “1” or the “2.”

Why it works: instead of guessing at the last second and hoping, you’re committing several strides out.
That calm, early decision is what turns a scrambled distance into a clean one. And the more you practice, the earlier you’ll spot it — which means more time to adjust and stay in control.

Simple to try. Harder to master. Worth every rep.

We break this one down fully in the Distances chapter of Clear Round 101. Link in bio. 📖 by @equicademy

Most riders think finding a distance is a gift you either have or you don’t.
It is not.
It is a skill — and it starts with your canter, not your eye. Here is the framework. by @equicademy
